Subject: Life after the expansion
Well, ok, not LIFE per se, but WoW life.

Anyhoo, this is my first MMO. I love it, in spite of its flaws and because of its strengths. I've been here since about a month after launch, and I've watched the game "mature" and the classes shift in relative strength. I've watched and experienced new content arriving - and this is where my question comes into play.

Having never played another MMO before, I have no clue what "SOP" is for a online game of this ilk for what happens after the expansion is released. Will there be any more updates to WoW after BC comes out? If so (which I would assume or it'd likely leave you open to false advertising charges with the plug on the back of the box), are they going to be relatively meaningful changes?

For example, several months after Burning Crusade is released (or a bit longer, problems depending) will we have a new "content" patch for the original WoW - accessible to anyone who didn't buy BC? Yes, I realize the strains the devs and tech support people will likely be under with the expansion's early time. I'm talking about once Burning Crusade comes out, will WoW "original" cease to be dynamic in any fashion? Will it be nothing but periodic bug fixes and/or talent tweaks, with nothing "new" in the gameworld not provided by the expansion?

Just wanted to ask, since I have no idea what the usual expectation is.
Masochism ftw.

Their will be subsequent patches after the release of the expansion. Consider that the expansion works like a much larger patch, updating the game to a new version.

However, players who do not purchase the expansion will still be able to play, but the content of expansion will not be available to them. Bug fixes or the like can still be implemented through the patching system.

Example:

Patch 2.1 is the first patch after the expansion. Any content that would pertain to the expansion would not be available if you did not have the expansion installed. Any content relating to pre-expansion content could be patched.

edit - For clarification. I am rereading notes I have and misspoke on some parts. Edited previous comments to reflect this.

The 'original' WoW can have content patched without the expansion. Most of the content development will likely focus on expansion, but additions or changes to original zones can still be patched.
