Subject: Why are there Qeues ?

I dont understand the technical reason for there being qeues.

Why are they implemented ?
How do they improve realm performance (if they are used for this) ?
Basically any info on the matter would be appreicated.

I know folks always vent in anger about the long wait times, but I'd like to be elightened on why they actually exist.

Thank you

There are really two reasons, and the severity of each has fluctuated somewhat over time but has remained fundamentally constant. First and foremost there is a limit to how many players can be on a realm due to game design reasons. The game, quests, spawn rates, economy, etc. are all balanced around a general population number to remain healthy. The second, and actually not the main reason for the cap as most may think, is performance reasons. Allowing an unlimited or even very large amount of players on a realm could definitely impact realm performance.

Ensuring that that game world is functioning properly both in design and performance is of course very important, and thus there is a limitation on per-realm player concurrency. We do our best to ensure that realms are remaining healthy in both these aspects and may offer transfers to or from realms that are seeing issue, and we will be continuing to do so.
