The patch did. An tremendous number of players putting in a lot of time in the game right now. We're monitoring the situation and evaluating different ways of addressing it, both now and in preparation for the Wrath of the Lich King launch in a few weeks.

This isn't people making new characters, but players already having a character on the realm and playing more. As an example, if those previously playing only 2 hour early evening and those playing 2 hours late evening are all now playing 4 hours all evening the population would double instantly.

There will be free character migration opening from the highest populated realms to the lowest tomorrow, running for a week. Which realms, and their destination realm, will be posted when the migration opens. It's also likely that additional realms will have migration available the week after that.

There will be free character migration opening from the highest populated realms to the lowest tomorrow, running for a week. Which realms, and their destination realm, will be posted when the migration opens. It's also likely that additional realms will have migration available the week after that.
Update 22/10: due to maintenance on some services, the migration will not be opened just yet. More news in a separate announcement soon.

To avoid putting additional strain on any system, migration will at this time be kept only to the bare minimum, thus we will need to wait with this migration a bit longer (sorry for being so sure in the first post).
