This guide comes to life through a person that has been tanking for some time, whether directly doing so by taking the position, or indirectly as a raid leader issuing the commands to another tank. Much of the described in this guide are simple views of my experience and thoughts throughout tanking in all the instances of this game. I will be reviewing every part that I can possibly remember of the tanking job, in both Off Tanking and Main Tanking positions, and try to explain as well as I can how to get the job done the best way. One thing must be remembered when reading this guide though, it is based on my personal experience for the most part, which should coincide most of the time with experiences of other tanks, but is not a statement of right and wrong or dictatorial truth, certain areas could be wrong, and other may not even apply to your situation at all. Take this guide as you wish, and I hope you can take some of what is said here and improve it in following threads.

This is a read for everyone who tanks or wishes to tank, whether you have very little experience or a lot, you can take some of the things i talk about and contrast them with your own experience and debate them.Tanking is something that you can only learn while, well, tanking, and through experience and practice. This guide will give a few pointers, some ideas and show you what, in my experience, the tanking job is about. So have a little of patience, check the sections that interest you or the whole thing if you're that courageous, and I hope i didn't make too many typos.

A few concepts I will explain in case you are new to all this:

Threat: This is what a tank worries about the most. Threat is how much the target hates you, if you have the highest threat or hate, the target will attack you.

Aggro: I will be using the word aggro to either say who the target is currently facing because he has the highest ammount of threat (which is not damage), or simply when talking about threat ( I will try to avoid to and simply use threat on those cases).

OT: Off tank, either someone being a backup tank on a primary target tanked by a Main Tank who is holding aggro, or someone who is Main Tanking a secondary target during a fight with several mobs.

MT: Main Tank. This is the person that will be taking the damage from the primary target. He may be in certain circumstances in charge of pulling, and is usually in charge of positioning. He is the responsible for the security of his group.

MA: Main Assist, this doesn't have to be a tank at all, could be any other class that a raid or party is assisting in order to kill it's target.

AFK: Away from the Keyboard
