Apparently my raid info carried over from live, because even before I had entered any instances on the test server I had a raid ID for Molten Core as shown by /raidinfo. So I started off by forming a two person "raid group" and entering Onyxia's Lair. I still only have the raid timer for Molten Core, and it was late at night so I figured it's bugged, I'll try again tomorrow. I log on the next day and have the displayed raid info for Molten Core and Onyxia's Lair as seen in the first block in the first screenshot.

So I go about my buisness, monkey about in Dire Maul. I ask my friends from Tichondrious what they're raid info is and they have the same Molten Core ID but no Onyxia ID, confirming that the MC ID was carried over from live.
Today I try adding someone to my instance of Onyxia using my bf's character. I have him send me a tell with his info as shown in block two of the first link. So we truck down to Onyxia, and I have him enter first. He gets a message that he was added to the raid and gets the same ID and same timer as myself as shown in the last block of the first link.
This final screenshot shows the happy couple in the same instance, not split, with my /raidinfo displayed.

Some things to note:
1) Raid timers seem to be set on 5 days now instead of 7
2) When a person is added to an instance their timer is synched to the raid groups timer, so it's possible to join a raid on Day 5, get loot, and join a fresh instance the next day.
3) You don't actually have to kill anything to get a raid timer. My boyfriend and I are pretty uber, but we're not about to duo Onyxia anytime soon. =p
WaR eats babies.

There seems to be many questions concerning the proper functionality of raid instances and why "lockouts" occur. I will attempt to explain some of the problems with the current functionality and the changes made to address these issues.
Currently the public servers work like this:
If a 40 member raid has an instance saved to them, the raid leader can invite replacement members only if the raid has not been completely disbanded. This was causing problems for the players that were replaced, as they would be locked out of the instance until the raid leader completely disbands that raid.
If the raid leader disbands the raid, they will be unable to invite any new members to that specific instance and would experience a "split" raid if attempting to do so. The members of the original raid would be in one instance while all the new replacement members would be in a second.
The patch addresses these issues by allowing the following to occur:
Once an instance is saved to a group of players, the raid leader can replace members of that raid without causing lockouts for the members that were replaced. Those that do not continue with that group can rejoin them at a later time or they can wait until their instance timer expires and join a new raid. This timer can be seen by using the /raidinfo command.
Raids will no longer be "split" if the raid has been completely disbanded. The original raid leader can invite members that were in the previous raid and new members alike, and they will find themselves within the same instance.
The only situation that can cause a "split" raid is if the leader was to invite players that currently have a separate instance saved to them.
A few other details:
Instances will only be saved when a "named" mob has been defeated for Molten Core, or Onyxia has been slain in Onyxia's Lair.
To avoid split raids, players need to be aware of their personal raid information seen by using /raidinfo. If you would like to raid Molten Core with a new group, be sure that your /raidinfo soes not list any timer for Molten Core.
If you get a new raid timer upon entering a raid instance, it is due to the raid leader already having an instance saved to them.
Hope this clarifies everything.
