| |
Just thought I'd start a discussion thread on Arcane Resilience, and our thoughts thereon. The previous thread had some spots of okay discussion amongst the multitude of /signed's so as per Tseric's preference, let's just talk about it in a normal discussion.
Arcane Resilence -- A wasted talent point
As has been noted in theorycraft from earlier posters, Arcane Resilience will do next to nothing to help mage players. In full Netherwind, it is said to provide 175 armor. This gives the melee damage reduction of the mage an additional (approximate) 1%.
When playing a mage, when struck by a melee attack, do we find ourselves saying "Alas! If only I had 1% more armor *aaaahhghghg...die* ?"
As has been noted many times, Mages are designed to die withstanding damage.
To reduce this damage, when stacked against a mage's minimal health, we find very quickly that 1% means little.
So, now that we've established that Arcane Resilience is nigh upon without benefit, we ask ourselves, why is it even there?
It looks right now, that people who would spec their mages with Arcane Resilience fall in 2 categories:
A - They don't actually realize how little armor it provides
B - They want the subsequent talent (or need another 1 point in their talents to progress to the next tier)
To those who fall in category A, their ignorance is their downfall. They will realize how completely uneffective their chosen talent was, and will have buyer's remorse.
For those who fall in category B, it would feel like trudging through talent-flab to get what you actually want. Not something at all desirable in a talent build.
Arcane Resilience -- A poor replacement
On a more concise note, Arcane Resilience has filled the spot of a previous talent. A much more worthwhile talent considered to be "Necessary" by the maging community. While the reason for the original talent's removal is understood, it stands to reason that something comparable (though less "Necessary") would fill its place.
In this case, its place has been filled with virtually nothing. For most mages, the talent box may as well say:
"0/1, Arcane Progression: This talent gives you +1 talent to your Talent total in the Arcane Tree"
Arcane Resilience -- A novel idea
The idea of a mage gaining armor from his Intelligence is an interesting prospective mechanic. Many mages would feel that this talent is worthwhile if it were given actual significance in damage mitigation.
Suggestions (most/all made by other posters previously):
-Have the talent offer up to 250% of INT as armor
-Have the talent offer magic damage mitigation instead
-Remove the talent and replace it with something else
I believe that Arcane Resilience is the flabbiest piece of flab in the Arcane tree right now. Let's have a civil discussion about that.
NOTE: Yes I have a mage. Yes, I like my hunter better. Yes, I still care about the Mage class.[ post edited by Marulji ]

See? This is much better and more useful than a petition thread.
I realize many have a great distaste for such a simple bonus and I shall give this thread traffic.
confusion, conclusion, reality, fatality
