Personally, I wouldn't want to play a Mage which wasn't an alchemist as there are far too many benefits. Especially with the upcoming changes to Alchemy Flasks (patch version 1.7) which allows the Flask effects to persist through death. I'm definitely looking forward to enjoying their powerful and long term benefits without fear of waste.

Q u o t e:
Right now I have a money profession combination, Herb/Skin. I was wondering how much longer i should keep this/how much longer this is profitable. Because it sounds like Alchemy is amazing and I could easily switch to Herb and supply Alch quick. Just some questions. Thanks in advance.

If you're concerned, you may consider simply continuing the use of both gathering professions, being careful to set aside herbs for potential Alchemy use at a later date. Only sell herbs which you feel are an excess to what you'll need.

But don't forget that tailors can make "Robes of the Archmage" epic item.

If you really want, I suggest doing tailoring/herbalism. Then gathering the herbs and sending them to a friend.

It's definitely a matter of personal preference. For me, I'd rather gather the materials for the select items I'd wear from tailoring and give them to someone else to craft, then have to spend time gathering the materials needed for the thousands of potions I'd be using from levels 1 to 60 and beyond.

All professions will be seeing improvements over time. I don't have anything specific to offer at the moment, except the fact that the next patch has a number of new recipes/patterns for all professions.
