Subject: slouken: GetInventory<thing> as of 1.11.2
As of today's patch, functions such as GetInventoryItemLink and GetInventoryItemTexture return nil or a blank string when called with the first argument set to "target" and a normally-valid target selected, which happens to be further than standard inspect range. This breaks all inspection range extension addons. Oddly, the tooltip method SetInventoryItem still works fine at any visible range.

Were these changes intended? If so, why were they not documented, and why does SetInventoryItem still work?

SetInventoryItem() will respect the inspect distance limit in 1.12.

BTW, the inspect range will be approximately doubled in 1.12.

Q u o t e:
Yeah, slouken, can you at least explain the reasoning on this? Who does it hurt if we can inspect at within visual range? What game mechanics does it break..?

If I had to guess (and I have to guess here, since I'm not a designer,) I would say it has something to do with the idea that maybe you can't tell exactly what a person is wearing at a distance.

BTW, the addons that allowed you to inspect someone far away were exploiting an oversight in the scripting API. The distance limitation has always been there, by design.
