Prior to the pet changes, there was no need for pet builds because your pet could learn everything with points to spare. With the added abilities, and players not knowing what all they should spec in, or know which ones might be more worthwhile than others, I desided to start a rating system. Below are the abilities and an overall rating (initial, based on my opinion. I'll edit them to update what others contribute) based on 2 aspects, PvP and PvE. In addition, there is a small explination as to what to expect and list the cost/reward ratio based on how expensive the skill is to what benefit the pet would get out of it.
Pet Calc: http://petcalc.tripod.com/
Petopia: http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/
The scale is on a 1 to 10 scale with 1 being low and 10 being high.
Great Stamina
Summary: Cost/reward ratio is very ineffective. At 25pts the pet recieves 10 stamina (100 hitpoints). Double that cost to 50pts and the pet recieves 13 stamina (130 hitpoints). At 185pts the pet recieves 40 stamina (400 hitpoints). While the end result of 400 hitpoints is nice (nothing major) the cost of 185pts (62% of the total points available to spend on pet skills) is excessive for the reward recieved.
PvP and PvE Effectiveness: From a PvP standpoint this is almost useless. Very rarely will there be any time where the 400 pet hitpoints saved the day, if ever. In most cases the damage caused by other players is high enough that the pet wouldn't last that much longer to deal additional damage that will make or break any engagements. From a PvE standpoint the hitpoints endgame don't account for much do to how hard same level mobs hit for. Based on how expensive the 400 extra hitpoints are and how rarely you would dip into those extra hitpoints (if you had them) and have your pet survive, the cost/reward value just isn't there. Any purchase less than max would give too little hitpoints to even make a difference.
End Assessment: The cost/reward ratio is very ineffectve for both PvP and PvE.
PvP: 3 out of 10
PvE: 4 out of 10
**A more detailed explination can be found on page 2 of this thread. http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.aspx?fn=wow-hunter&t=795383&tmp=1#post795383 **
Natural Armor
Summary: This is a straight forward physical damage reduction. The benefits for protecting aginst physical attacks in both PvP and PvE are the same. The cost of the level 10 (1000 armor) is 50% of the total points available (150pts out of 300pts) for the pet skills. A solid investment for a PvE tank pet for sure.
PvP and PvE Effectiveness: Majority of the time, the hunter will be the target in PvP and duels rather than the pet. Do to that simple aspect of combat this will have a lower cost/reward ratio than in a PvE setting. For PvE this is a solid skill for a tanking pet. The cost/reward ratio for damage reduction is descent.
End Assessment: The cost/reward ratio is very solid for PvE with a falloff for PvP do to the pet not being the primary target or a target at all (physically).
PvP: 4 out of 10
PvE: 10 out of 10

Great post, Quillixx. I've taken the liberty of removing some of the "bump" posts in order to facilitate discussion on this thread.
