Subject: Broken Tooth - 1.0 Attack?!?
Has anyone found the cat "Broken Tooth" in the Badlands? There are only 20 entries in the Allakhazam database, so either he's rare or new. The one post on his page claims he has a 1.0 attack speed, hence my interest.

Anybody encountered this elusive beastie?

FYI, folks, I am looking into this for you... I want to make sure we don't have a repeat of last time.

Hokay, folks, the developers got back to me. Here's the deal.

First, the Spire Spiderling change was done to balance LBRS -- while it did affect you as well, it was not done to "nerf" Hunters directly.

The reason why the previous change affected you is due to a bug that exists with pet attack speeds. As I have stated previously, Hunter pets are not supposed to keep their "wild" attack speed when tamed.

In the case of Broken Tooth and others, however, we will not be changing the wild attack speed to balance Hunters. We will be fixing this bug at the same time we implement the means to customize your pet's attack speed so there is no lapse where Hunter pets suffer.

Changes may be made to the beast for balance reasons involving its encounter -- I will make that disclaimer -- but there is no planned change to this particular pet to my knowledge.

It'll be in addition to the Beast Mastery tree to my knowledge, Stuckmojo.

I'm sorry if you folks feel that was doublespeak. I was attempting to give you the information I received without saying something that you would use to hang me should something change. Perhaps I should break it down a little more...

1) There are no plans to change Broken Tooth's attack speed to my knowledge at this time.

2) There is currently a bug that allows tamed pets to keep their wild attack speed.

3) There are plans to allow Hunters to customize their pet's attack speed.

4) We are not implementing the bug fix until the above change is in place.

5) The Spire Spiderling change was not a Hunter balance change but an encounter change -- wild speeds may be changed for that reason at some point in the future, which will affect Hunters if this takes place before the bug fix/implementation.

No, I can't confirm that, Sparhawk. We've never said that. All I've said is that the wild speed will be different from the tamed speed. I don't have further specifics on it.

It should be training point based, I believe.

I believe approach speed is in a similar position as attack speed. There will be ways to customize it, but until that time the pets that have differing approach speeds will stay as-is.

Q u o t e:
Thats a fair enough and honest answer I believe with what Cay has available.

What concerns me is the new pet system seems to be trivializing the Beast spec tree to a certain extent. With a full range of abilities ( just from what I have seen ) you can bring your pet pretty close to what a fully specced Beast pet does movement and damage wise.

I guess my question is once there are implemented are they going to stack with existing abilities in the Beast specc ? In addition is there any plans ( no hard dates insider info, yes or no would suffice ) at a change to Beastmaster abilities since this does trivialize them to a certain extent ?

I am fairly certain that these abilities will be used in addition with the Beast Mastery talents. I'm not positive however.

No -- we don't implement new abilities to compensate for bugs. We need to fix the bug, and that's still on the table.

Arumar, you misunderstand what I said.

Never once did I say that the change to Spire Spiderlings was unintentional.

The bug -- the unintentional effect -- is that ALL beasts should have both a wild speed and a tamed speed, and there currently is no "tamed speed" given. As such, beasts that are tamed currently keep their wild speed. This is a bug, and will be fixed.

Now then, just to break it down so there is hopefully no more confusion:

1) Spire Spiderlings were a difficult portion of LBRS in the numbers groups fought them. Their extremely fast attack speed was a major part of this. This same factor made them attractive to Hunters, because pets currently keep their wild attack speed.

2) The encounter in LBRS was deemed too difficult by the development team, and as such the attack speed was changed. This was an encounter change -- it was not directed towards Hunters in any way -- but those who had these pets were still affected.

3) We will not be changing the Spire Spiderlings back, as that would revert the absolutely intentional encounter change. Making their old speed the tamed speed would require fixing the bug (which we have not yet done -- there currently is NO "tamed speed" difference). When we do change it, there is no guarantee that the old speed will be the new tamed speed. Odds are it will be more moderate and the attack speed will be customizable.

Is that clear? :)

Q u o t e:
Cay,

If it was too difficult, why then did they not just lower the amount of mobs?

This too me does seem like a ninja-hunter-nerf.

They did.

However, they also felt the attack speed was too fast. Believe what you like, but I will tell you that the change was made to the encounter for reasons surrounding dungeon balance -- Hunter pets were not on the list of reasons to change it at all.

Herbie, it was their decision. I personally managed to do the spider encounter with only 4 people pre-patch... which was exciting. ;)

Folks, I don't have specific numbers for you on the upcoming pet changes, so please, don't expect them from me right now. There's still some work to be done in that regard.
