Subject: On "skill and time invested"
"We've kept a lot in mind while creating the arena system to help make it as centered on player skill as possible, and not time invested."

The idea that anything in WoW does not depend on time invested is laughable. All the skill in the world isn't going to help you when you pit your blue and BOE epic geared self against an opposition in T2+ epics. This is the way it has always been, is now and probably will be. I have no issues with this and nor do most people still playing.

The rationale in banning consumables and outside buffs seems (quite reasonably) to be that some players would devote a hell of alot of time (or IGE $$$...) to acquiring flasks and other expensive consumables in order to give themselves an advantage over others. No problems here.

What I don't understand is where the ban on Engineering fits in here. Certainly a player with engineering enjoys numerous situational advantages over players without this skill. But again this is nothing new, and has always been the case, and not just for Engineering (free action pots in WSG anyone?). Moreover engineering is equally available to all classes and factions and so does not afford advantages to any group or groups.

Products such as iron grenades, flash bombs, net-o-matics etc can all be very useful at times but they are a part of the game which players should be forced to respond to, just like stealth, bubble or anything really.

So, I for one do not understand the rationale for an outright ban on engineering products. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.

Cheers

Your post seemed to switch topics pretty quick into a defense on your own engineering ability, so I'll address that as it seemed to be the actual point of the post.

Allowing engineering items in the arena would really mean requiring engineering of all players that wish to compete in the arena system. We want players to be able to compete in the arena system as well as enjoy the expansion content, and allowing engineering as the only consumables beyond bandages and conjured items would really make it a required ability. That's not a dynamic we really want to promot specifically in the arena system. I realize that you have time invested in your profession, and seeing the use of that ability effectively blocked in the arena is disheartening, but I would recommend keeping in mind that we're going to be continuing to support the battleground system, as well as a number of outdoor PvP objectives in the expansion.

We will be continuing to develop and test the arena system though, and it is definitely possible some of the announcements made today will change, as stated in the thread itself.

I'd prefer you address the first part, since it was harder to answer, and pretty whiney.

Edit: "Promote"

Not really, as stated in numerous articles and interviews we're planning to provide rewards through the arena system that are equal to the items available in PvE.

Q u o t e:
Blizzard, I'm sure you know this, but if you level out a playing field and make it so there is no reason for players to put in time to get either epics, profession skills, or world buffs that give them an advantige, and make the game perfectly even like Counter-Strike, people are not going to spend time in this game.

That's being just a tad melodramatic I think. The arena system is not going to encompass the entirety of the game as we know it. It's not going to suddenly change the magnetic forces controlling PvP systems in every MMO in existence.

It's one specific PvP system that is going to help place more emphasis on player skill. I'm excited about it. I'm kind of confused now where people are upset about us removing some of the time requirements from the game. If you're only comfortable in your ability to climb the ranks because you have a lot of time on your hands, and not because you're good at PvP, then the arena isn't for you.

The arena will be the place where players who want pure and dirty PvP skirmishes will go. That may not appeal to everyone. We're fine with that.

Q u o t e:
I'm more worried about how they are going to do the 1v1 fights. Paladin vs mage? It doesn't matter how skilled and geared a paladin ism if they're going up against a mage that know's how to counterspell, it's over. Same thing against warlocks, they have all the crowd control in the world, plus if they have a felhunter out, they can take down any class that casts spells, even if you kill the pet, they can just fear you and summon it back. So, how are these Caster vs Counterspell encounters going to be worked out?

It's 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5 currently.

even if it is teamed, mages and warlocks will rule, their ability to crown control for extended periods of time cannot be matched.

I don't want to discourage your discussion on what team makeups will be the best, or what strategies could be used, those are all things that are fun to theorize on for now, but keep in mind that the expansion will be providing new abilities and talents for each class. Whether or not that will change the situation you mentioned is unknown, but it's at least something to keep tucked into the back of your AC/DC beanie.

Q u o t e:
Seriously, man, think for a bit. Now in these arenas, how many will you have? Maybe one or two? Compared to fps games that have 12+ maps per game, how long do you really think that people will stay playing the same map over and over and over again with little chance to improve their character other then getting gear through raiding?

Just think for a few minutes about how fun that will be after a month and decide if this "new generation" is really much of a step forward. Or might it be much more a step backwards?

Did you miss the parts where we talked about arena rewards? :)

The main question i was wondering is weapon buffs and or poision going to be allowed?

Buffs and poisons are allowed but will have to be applied while in the arena "holding area" by yourself or another member of your team, depending on how each buff works of course. This is done to ensure no outside help is being provided to the teams competing.

More rewards that will be trumped by raiding? Or real rewards for a change?

Yeah, nothing spells replayability like grinding for months in one place lol.

Guess that's what we get for playing a game developed for the lowest common denominator.
