Subject: Possible Solution to DKs
   I have been thinking alot about this, because I feel that DKs (or rather civilians) in their current form has almost totally destroyed town raids and world PvP within those towns.

However, I know there are certain things that the Devs want to remain unchanged. They do not want to make civilians untargetable or something the opposite faction cannot interact with. They also don't want to remove the disincentive to kill these NPCs. I'll be taking that into account with my suggestion.

The main problem with DKs is that most people aren't out to kill these essential NPCs and rather there death is collateral damage during a town raid. Can't the Devs code Civilians like totems? Currently totems are immune to all AoE effects.

So the plan:

1. Make it so that no NPCs attack players unless specifically targetted and attacked.

2. Make Civilians immune to all Area of Effect spells and spells that effect multiple opponents (Whirlwind, Blade Flurry, Chain Lightening).

This plan will prevent the killing of civilians by those who have no intention of killing these NPCs, as the only way to kill them would be to target that NPC specifically and initiate an attack on it. However the disincentive to kill these NPCs that are necessary for the progression of lower level players remains intact.

Thoughts? A Blue response would be much appreciated if you have the time.

   I normally try not to respond to 'Blue' titled posts and would like it if you amended your title for me to get rid of it.

I wanted to take a moment to let you know that DKs will be removed as a part of the Burning Crusade Beta test. The developers are doing this to see how well it does with the other changes they have planned for the honor system.

There is no guarantee that DKs will remain out for release of the expansion however, we feel that it is important enough to get into testing and see how it works out.

At this point I don't think it's about keeping NPCs safe as it is that there are other things for players to do aside from killing off quest NPCs for kicks. However, this is part of the reason for the upcoming testing. We want to see if what we have planned helps make the DK idea unecessary as a part of the system.

Either that or some variant of a solution will need to be put in place. While there is no guarantee that DKs will remain out, there is also no guarantee that they will be put back in as they are now. We're at a 'let's see how this goes' sort of mindset right now. It's up to the players to show us that it will work.

What i mean is you roll on a PvP server you have to go in there expecting...to be ganked a lot, to die a lot, to see people from horde inside Ironforge (rogues), to see people ganking lowbies for kicks, to see a lot of 60's in Warlord gear, to fight the opposing faction a lot. These things are expected PvP is interpreted as full war between the factions. There is no underlying peace on those realms. And for that reason alone NPC's including quest NPC's and tailors, vendors, guards, EVERYTHING should be killable.

So what you sit there and gank some lowbies quest giver...this is the first step to learning how to call your faction over for help. And people listen. I've sat on AoS and ganked level 1-5 humans in northshire on my rogue at 40 for kicks and giggles. In about 20 min I had a = level pally try to run me off he failed but he came to help. At about an hour 2 60's showed up to do what the 40 couldn't. These things must be learned on PvP servers.


Now for PvE servers they are also defined as Person vs "ENVIRONMENT / EVERYTHING" Town Raids are most likely to be more frequent on these servers and the same rules for PvP should apply here. Maybe make NPC Quest Givers unkillable but the Vendors and such should be attackable.


RP servers are to have all NPC's unattackable (civilians) your roll playing not griefing.

same with RP-PvP.


Just my point of view.


Creating core game differences between PvE and PvP realms isn't as easy as it sounds. In theory it sounds like a great idea until you start adding new content which in turn adds new complexities and possible errors. While it would be nice to be able to differentiate more it's just not practical from a future development outlook at this point in time.

I don't know Teniela. I only know that it is tied in with the changes to the honor system. People can try to figure out what is planned but it's best to just take a 'wait and see' approach for now.

This is unlikely since we have plans to significantly change the honor system for the expansion. If the DKs are removed then it will no longer be a part of the overall system.

Why Ads?
