Subject: Dying armor?
Tailors with 300 skill outta be able to dye armor. Not the whole color but maybe a secondary color like how Baldur's Gate had. Everyone looks the same.

Stupid idea?

I don't think anything "can't" or "won't" be done, but there would certainly be some technical hurdles to overcome if we were to try to implement a dyeing system. The game wasn't designed to do so, and it would require that each individual item able to be dyed be given a completely new texture, or likely a series of textures, which would definitely increase the overall size of the game quite a bit. Not to mention a UI to support the ability, new items involved in dyeing, the tech allowing it all to work, and testing the entire system. It would be, I would guess, a massive undertaking for the textures alone.

I don't think "can't" or "won't" would describe our current thoughts on a dyeing system, but it isn't something we're currently developing or planning for.

Hey, do you want an expansion or not? ;)

Oh come on a simple hue shift shouldn't be all that hard for your game engine to handle...

No, you're right, a hue shift probably wouldn't be immensely difficult to implement, but it would probably also look crappy. World of Warcraft is about over the top colors, vibrant colors. You tend to end up with weird washed out pastels with that method than vibrant colors, and any type of dark color completely voids the item of texture detail. I can't see us taking that route.

You can cite other games that have the tech to do so, but it's likely that it was designed that way from the inception of the game, and/or they use a method which results in less than stellar results.

Are you trying to say the devs have used up the 4 layers of texturing for all the armor in the game.

I can say that if the devs from dark age of camelot can use one layer as a changable color filter for all there armor, i think it can be done here. Also, In SWG, lots of the armor was able to be changed colors.

So dont say it is a hard thing to do. Just tell the truth that because of the amount of ppl playing in the game, limits the amount of armor textures in the game that will have the chance of more lag. Now was that hard to say.

Edit: BTW, i do alot of 3d art and low poly characters and props for friend so i know what im talking about.

Again, their textures were likely designed from the inception of the game with those abilities. Ours were not. Redoing every texture with new transparencies and layers is not something that can just be whipped up in a few days, or likely even weeks or months. It would take a large number of artists away from creating new items and textures for the expansion. I don't want that. Do you want that? :)

It didn't seem to be a huge undertaking for a popular and amazingly "free to play" game like Guild Wars.

Can someone post the headache guy? Seriously.
