Some brief thoughts on Soul Shards.
First off, The world will not end if a Community Manager does not respond, nor will I leave WoW, nor will anyone care. Warcraft is very serious business.
Warlocks will know that during Player Vs Player activity, the greatest use of soul shards occurs, due to many of our instants and nukes requiring shards. I cannot speak for other warlocks, I can however speak for myself: I never go into battlegrounds, or attack alliance characters without soul shards. Its stupid. Without them, we are crippled. We lose access to all pets bar the infernal and the Imp (doomgaurd not being viable to gain access to during a battleground contest), we lose access to shadowburn, soulfire, and the ability to create soulstones, spellstones, firestones and healthstones. Thus, we are condemned to a certain time of farming mobs beforehand, in order to gain the shards needed. Time no other class has to spend.
Now, despite the whinging and whining that others have made in the past about PvP, the reality is that its not perfect, but mostly, its fair. Blizzard isnt perfect, but they have done a good job, so far in my opinion. What if we took out soul shards, as a requirement for the spells and abilitys mentioned earlier? What would actually change? The actual pvping ability of warlocks would not, as all those abilites are either on cooldowns, or you cannot have more than one particular rank of stone..or more than one pet. So the real difference in removing soul shards? Less time grinding, for shards themselves. No one likes pointless grinding. Why not just take them out of the game? What actual point do they serve, other than wasting time? We are still going to grind for them. Remove them, and the only thing youre changing is the time spent grinding and worrying about shards Really, they have no lore significance that I can find, I have played every single Warcraft game, and read the manuels for lore mentions to soul shards and found none.
Lastly, Id just like to mention that no other class has to worry about reagents for so many essential spells, all I would ask is that this idea be considered.
Also, if needed, instead of having shards, replace the cost with a subtraction of health..?
Just a thought, and unlike a small number on the boards, I do appreciate the work that the Community Managers do, and the fact that they cant answer every question, and so forth.
You cant ban me! I'm the First!

Scyle comes to General! A day that shall live in infamy!
Well, shards...where to begin.
Obviously, PvP puts a stress on shard consumption. However, this is probably the only remaining situation where this becomes clearly noticable. Farming shards while starting a dungeon is not that hard. By that, I mean even if you go into a dungeon with no shards, you can recoup enough off of mobs in the early portion of the dungeon.
There is not going to be one comprehensive answer to this question, but I'll bring up a point that may or may not have been brought up before.
If you are suggesting removing the shard system, doing so would remove distinction between classes. Now, I'm not stating this as an extreme. I'm not saying soul shards define the class or the lack of soul shards would make them simply shadow mages, but my point lies between those two extremes.
Soul shards do provide certain distinction for the class, different game play decisions, different management decisions. Removing them simply makes them more like another class or caster in how they are played.
While that is not the sole reason for this system, it is one angle and an important one.
P.S. - Your YTMND still ranks as one of my favorites of any to incorporate my visage or words.
