Subject: New change or is it just me?
I was wandering around in Stranglethorn the other day, killing gorillas. A level 40 basically kicked the gorilla as he meandered past, and my XP for the kill dropped to TWELVE from well over 100. Has it always been this way and I never noticed, or did they change things??

A player who deals damage to an already tapped creature will essentially leech XP value from the player who tapped it. This is why Hunters can receive little to no XP from creatures if their pet deals most or all of the damage. The game does measure damage contribution and XP gain to prevent power-leveling or exploitation, among other reasons.

I'm not sure if the exact same mechanics have always been there, but it has generally worked like this for some time.

Q u o t e:
tseric, what is the rational behind reducing xp (and preventing looting) from hunter and lock pets' kills (and reduced xp from totems if that's true, i never used damage totems all that much to notice)? I mean, aren't they an integral part of our class? I just started playing a hunter, and I love it, but the fact that i can't grind by having my cat dps a target a few levels below it while I attack another one of similar level is kind of disheartening...

I mean, a warrior can grab two mobs -2 levels, and use cleave/sweeping strikes/ww to take them down pretty efficiently, but because half of our character is a seperate entity we aren't entitled to the same?

Some of the issues related to this have been bugs and unintentional. However, at the core, this kind of mechanic is used to prevent AFK farming and other such behavior. Provided you deal some damage to the target yourself(and don't let the pet do all the work), the effects are negligible.
