This may take way too much manpower, but I would imagine a "sub-thread" heirarchy system here and on the class boards would be easier to garner useful information.
When everyone and their mother posts a new thread on the same topic, a forum mod could simply "drag and drop" it into an existing thread on the topic, thereby cutting down on clutter (you would need to expand the main thread to see the sub-thread). Instead of new Rank 14, tier 3, casual vs hardcore, etc threads coming up 20+ times a day, you would see one thread on the topic and all their constituent sub-threads.
Eventually this will cut down on the new posts, as generally they have no new information to provide, but want to see their topic shiny and new so they can be heard. If you drag it elsewhere, you can make the thread "disappear" without having to delete it, removing the need to complain about deletion.
This ocean of teeming masses is frustrating. I would imagine you guys miss 50% of the useful information because you don't have time to read it before it's buried 2-3 pages deep. If you could categorize the threads into a coherent system, both the readers and your devs/mods could get more out of these forums. That and genuinely good posts would get viewed.

We're in the late stages of the new forum software development, one of the features I have been able to toy around with recently is the new search functionality, and it's sweet. [ post edited by Drysc ]
