Pilai posted this first, but I wanted to put it out so that everyone saw it as well. Thanks Pilai for pointing it out.
From the contest rules, located at http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/contests/ptr-contest/rules-50.html we learn:
"To participate in the Contest, a qualified entrant must create a World of Warcraft character on one of these designated servers, and be one of the first 1,000 qualified entrants to level a character to level 50 during the Contest Period. In the event that 1,000 qualified entrants are not able to level a character on the Designated Test Realms to level 50 during the Contest Period, then the 1,000 qualified entrants who either level their characters to level 50, or are closest to reaching level 50 will be adjudged to be the Grand Prize Winners."
The italics are mine, for emphasis. It is not a measure of time /played, as you can see. The deciding factor is being one of the first 1,000 entrants to level a character to level 50. It specifically says that if there aren't 1,000 characters at that level, it'll be those who made 50 first, and whoever else is closest to 50, up to a total of 1,000.
Thus, if you make a character and level it to level 50 in 48 hours, you will not win, if you are the 1,001st person to make it to 50. Even if #1,000 took six months and you only took 48 hours, he still got there first.
Moo, and so forth.
