Ok so more and more. I see players (toons) that are female but after a few weeks of playing I learn that they are actually guys! Now I'm not on WoW to 'hook up' or find a chick but I just don't understand why guys roll famale toons? Some of the best players I know have female toons and I come to realize that they are actually guys! It makes me wonder how many famale toons are ACTUALLY of famale players. And is there such a thing as a famale player who rolls a male toon? You guys ever seen that?
Anyone have any ideas? What inspires a guy to roll female toon? (Besides begging for stuff.. the players I know don't beg)

If they read these forums much, they certainly have.
Hi. I'm a woman who plays male toons more often than not. ;)
The reasons for players doing this are probably as numerous as the players themselves, but for myself, I have a few reasons why I play the opposite gender.
First, I'm a role-player. The character on the screen isn't "me", really -- it's a different entity in another world. I know there are many that prefer to identify with their characters more readily and thus choose the same gender, but I have no problem playing either. Playing something substantially different from oneself can help one become immersed in the world and the story.
After that, I'm honestly not overly fond of the "special treatment" that female characters in these games can often receive. I know, I sound crazy -- why turn down free items and money, right? I'm less concerned about the tangible rewards and more about the behavioral difference. Your guild or group will often be more relaxed, more themselves, if they think you're "one of the guys". It's amusing how much that changes when there's suspicion that a woman might be around. And of course, I'm not particularly keen on other special treatment female characters can receive in the form of potential harassment.
There are aesthetic reasons, too. Sometimes I simply like the look of one gender more than the other.
Coming as I do from a role-playing background, I don't believe it's an odd thing for players to pick a gender that is not their own. This is an MMORPG, after all. ;)[ post edited by Caydiem ]

Q u o t e: What do you do if a girl in game hits on you?
I've been playing these games since '97 and it hasn't happened to the point where I thought they were serious. :P

Q u o t e: Hey Caydiem, want to reply to a real thread now?
Mmm, a mage from Shadow Moon. I take it you're after either further clarification on the trinkets or a response on your realm issues, yes?
This is my community to manage, and this is a real thread. This discussion has remained civil. You, on the other hand, are trolling as per the definition in the Code of Conduct to which you agreed, and this is your warning to stop.
I respond to game issues when I have the information to give and not before. That's simply how it works. I am indeed doing my job by encouraging discussion in this thread.
Speaking of, on with the discourse!

Q u o t e: As a mild role-player, I find it too difficult to mimic a female persona. As absurd as it may initially sound, a change in gender can actually be more difficult to accurately, honestly express than a change in race.
I actually find it easier to identify with, and RP, a male troll, a male gnome, a male undead, or a male tauren, than it would be to portray a female of any race.
So I generally always select a male character for any RPG. In non-RPG games, say Tomb Raider, it doesn't really matter. Or in action games where I control something that's totally inhuman/nonlive (a spaceship in a shooter) it doesn't matter.
Masculinity and femininity...these are powerful, defining aspects of a person, that go beyond outward appearances. In a game where I try to identify with my character, I find it too difficult to go the other way.
As far as the 'if I have to look at a butt for 8 hours, it better be a nice one' excuse, I don't buy it. Does the 'ugly male butt' prevent you from playing sports video games? Watching male sporting events? Watching any sort of TV for a long period of time? Nope.
There's gotta be another reason. I think it's because some males want their own dream girl to control. ;)
Every time I've admitted that I was, in fact, female while I was behind a male character, people have been surprised -- and this includes times when I was actively role-playing. I don't know whether that's a compliment or not, honestly. :P[ post edited by Caydiem ]
