To me it seems like a waste of my mana to heal a pet since the pet classes have their own spell for that but I may be off base here.
What IS the accepted group "etiquette" on this practice?

I think trying to apply etiquette in these types of situations only complicates the matter. My feelings are this, if you're playing a support character, your focus should be on the overall survivability of the party, which means you heal any friendly target that's playing an integral role to the progression of the group's endeavors.
