Subject: What takes so long to make an instance?
Why does it take like 6 months to make an instance?

People churn out maps in FPS shooters at an insane rate. The architecture is no more complicated. Then all you have to do is take some mobs, give them some stats, put them in the dungeon and presto. Maybe design 1 unique model for a boss, give him a spell and a deagro. Generate some loot. Crate a couple quests.

I've seen BWL, I have no idea what took them so long to make it. You could put together a Molten core 2 on the weekend, I'm sure.

How is all the holiday crap they add in any harder then making an instance?

Something such as a new instance cannot be just thrown together, plopped down, and expected to be fun or well received. Your proposal seems more like a Fargodeep mine with elites thrown in, and it probably wouldn't satisfy those looking for new instances. That being said, even to drop everything and create this new instance would require key people being pulled from their current projects.

Even the levels for First Person Shooters, as you mentioned, can take months upon months to develop. Unless the person designing them is a supernatural being capable of instantaneous production, it will suffer from time constraints. Any one could create an FPS level within a few hours if necessary with the proper knowledge, but the likelihood of it being fun are extremely slim. There are many things that must be taken into account that are far beyond the thought necessary for FPS level creation. How will the instance fit into the world, what will be the lore behind it, the itemization, how will items dropped impact the economy, how will the instance compete with other areas of the game, what level range is it designed for, will the items dropped match to a proper difficulty, creation of those item models, skinning, stat placement, geometry creation, mob placement, balance, testing, etc.

The development process is still infinitely more complex than what I have touched on here. It may seem like it should be a simple matter, but I think that is a compliment to our ability to hide the large amount of work behind something that feels natural and is easy to digest. Personally I would rather play something that is fun and worthwhile as opposed to something that feels thrown together, and it certainly would feel that way.
