Subject: WoW a one trick pony, NY times
I have read the recent NY Times and I am deeply saddened by what I read. I truly feely that Mr. Kaplan is completely in the dark about his own game. Interesting counter article on the real reason why raiding is required towards the end of the post.

Here is the article for those who have not seen it.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/28/sports/othersports/28vide.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1

Essentially Tigole confirms, despite the CM's deceptive insistence otherwise, that Blizzard will always cater to the raider. Raid or quit essentially.

They mistakenly, imo, believe that WoW is so successful because it is easy. This is laughable. It is successful because Warcraft had a huge following from the RTS game and because you could play it when you wanted and accomplish things.

This is no longer the case. In order to compete, or even advance your character, you are forced to schmooze the end guilds undergoing their stupid hazing only to find out that they have plenty of your class. You have to sell your soul to whatever whim the guild comes up with or risk being kicked from the guild.

I have not heard one person on the forums say they want easy epics. This is in fact the worst argument Raiders have against fixing the itemization problem. We want difficult dungeons, long difficult chains so that we too can have accomplishment when we finally get items. This article is a joke and is truly damning on how clueless Blizzard is.

This is the real reason Blizzard requires Raiding.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11009379/

They have subscribed to an old and tired paradigm and given up trying to come up with ways of fixing the problem. Instead, they feel all high and mighty and spout the virtues of raiding when a seemingly majority of raiders hate it and ONLY do it for the loot. It is all about the hazing.

Blizzard, you built a great game, but with the decision to put raiders first you have sealed your own coffin and opened the door for the other gaming companies to usurp your position. All Vanguard need do to attract customers is say that raiders will not be given first priority, and although difficult to do, non-raiders can compete. I put in 30-40 hours a week. I will not turn my back on my friends to subscribe to your paradigm and kiss the hiney of the uber guilds for loot. However, if I do not then I have nothing to do.

I cannot begin to say how dumbfounded I am that the company is making such a colosal mistake. EQ's numbers are low. If raiding was fun and people enjoyed it they would not have left all the work the put into that game to come to yours. Why can you not understand this Tigole? Take some of the money you are earning and do some HARDCORE psychological research into this issue and poll your clients.

The article doesn't state this, in-fact, it details how important we feel creating end-game content for everyone to enjoy is, including players with a casual agenda. We've already stated on numerous occasions (even mentioned in this article) that pre-expansion, we have more casual friendly content in-store. The expansion will also focus on casual content, in addition to introducing players to many new five and ten-man winged style dungeons.

I don't believe any one reason contributes to the success of World of Warcraft. To be quite honest, it's a great game, and appeals to a broader audience than many other games in the same genre. Despite some of the negative backlash you see here on the forums, we do in-fact listen to our players daily, and work to create a better World of Warcraft with each and every patch.

As stated above, an upcoming patch will introduce casual content which will allow those that don't wish to raid an avenue in which they can continue to advance their character's equipment. With that being said, I don't believe your experience with guilds in World of Warcraft describes the guild situation for everyone.

In any case, the rest of your comments are more of a general rant, so I'm not going to quote each piece. In short, we're aware that many players want additional non-raid content, and we're doing what we can to provide such. Please be patient, as both upcoming content patches and the expansion will provide content of this nature.

How about new PvP content??? Do you have any new BG in mind? Anyting other than "soon we will bring world pvp back?" Anything???

We're working on outdoor PvP as we speak but unfortunately, I don't have any specific details to provide at this time. As far as a new Battleground is concerned, not anytime soon. We're more interested in focusing our efforts in improving the existing Battlegrounds, and PvP systems in place.
