Actually, the reason behind the lock was that players were bumping a very old thread that could no longer be responded to. Not only does that not help things, other readers are not able to read what's being said in the later posts.
Also, the game is always evolving, and there may be new factors that would shift the scope of the discussion. I would like to encourage a new discussion on the topic, rather than keeping an old topic afloat, which doesn't generate as much new conversation, because you can't read the latest posts.
