Subject: **** Flamed For Looting Rules! ****
   **** The Problem: ****

I have my looting rules, and I believe they are fair. I tell everyone what they are before we start the instance. However, today a warrior apparently missread what I said and decided to take off halfway through the instance because he did not like my rules. Furthermore, the majority, if not the entirity of my guild agreed with his position!

What are these loot rules that are so ridiculous that people referred to me as a greedy jackass chinese gold farmer? I'll tell you. Keep in mind they are for PuGs, not guild runs.

**** 1) Everyone rolls NEED on all BoE ****

Yup. That's it. Simple as that. I guess this SOUNDS good to everyone, but once you give an example, people start to disagree.

**** Example: Foror's Compendium in Dire Maul ****

This is a BoE item, meaning you can trade and / or sell it after you acquire it. Thus, it falls under my rule of everyone should get an equal shot at it. But isn't it just for Warriors and Pallys? The quest that the book gives is, yes, but since the book can be sold for gold and everybody needs gold, everybody can use this book.

Woah, that sounds a bit greedy, doesn't it? Selling something that someone can use for gold! Well I agree it does SOUND greedy, but consider this perspective:

All 5 members put equal effort into a DM run. Should they not all have equal chance at a reward? If Foror's book was instead a bag of gold worth 2000g, everyone would roll on it. Instead, it is a book worth 2000g to everyone. Try and see past what the actual item is to see its value. A Priest may sell this to get his Eye of Shadow. A Hunter may buy Blue Dragon Sinew.

There is also the possibility that a group member who is not a Paladin or Warrior may want to give the item to a friend or guildmate that is. The Warrior didn't do any more work in that run than anyone else, and therefore does not have a right to the best item in the dungeon. He has a right to roll, of course, but not an undisputed right to win an item everyone worked for.

The only way this system would work is if every class had an epic BoE drop in that same dungeon (similar to the BoE Blue books that drop). Otherwise, the loot table is unfairly skewed towards Warrior and Paladin.

**** Example 2: Bracers of Valor ****

It seems every group I'm in, if there is only one Warrior, then he gets these without question. Makes sense, right? Not to me. For the same reasons I mentioned in the previous example, this item could benefit anyone.

I asked some players if they would let everyone roll on the Bracers of Valor if there was a button on the item that when clicked, would turn the bracers into your set bracers. Ex: if a Druid won, they would become Wildheart. The players I asked said yes, if that was possible, everyone could roll.

While there is no button, with a little bit of effort I can turn Bracers of Valor into any other set's Bracers. How? I simply list the Bracers of Valor on the AH, then when they sell, I take that gold and buyout the set of my choosing.

**** Summary: ****

If...
BoE = Gold
And...
Gold = Need to everyone
Then...
BoE = Need to everyone

Simple as that. Does anyone see this logic?

   Personally, I would not play in a group using the loot rules you've outlined in your post. While I would certainly respect the fact that you found those rules favorable for your particular playstyle, they are based upon greed, which doesn't appeal to me on any level, and as a result, I'd leave your party. The current means to achieve loot in high end instances is competitive enough without having to deal a player mandated rule system which would force one to compete for beneficial items with others that just wish to make some gold (which is infinite on a long enough time line anyway).

The reversal issue I have with this is the fact that I in turn would never feel comfortable rolling on an item that was an upgrade for someone else, simply because I can go and turn it around for (x) gold. I try and treat other players in the game the same as I would my real life friends when dealing with item distribution. If I was running the instance with a friend and an item dropped he/she needed, I wouldn't roll against them unless it was a competitive situation and presented a fairly equal upgrade for us both. I would give this same respect to those I don't know.
