How powerful are the racial leaders in comparison with the big bosses from the high-end raid instances?
Would nefarian whip thrall?
Or cairne?
And how about high tinker mekkatorque?

While the racial leaders are indeed among the most powerful inhabitants of Azeroth -- you'll recall, for example, Thrall and Grom Hellscream's battle with Mannoroth in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos -- what makes them especially good at what they do is a combination of things, some of the most notable being:
- their tactical prowess;
- their undying care and concern for their people and their heritage; and most importantly,
- their ability to inspire champions (you) to take up the cause and take on these deadly forces in the name of the Alliance and the Horde.
Every defeat of Ragnaros, Nefarian, and all the lesser bosses is as much a victory for the racial leaders as it is for you. That is, they are only as powerful as the forces that fight in their name.
