Before I explain, I'm not some crazy a hole who gets off on some crazy fixation with mutilatiing humans. We play the same game this is a legitimate question.
Why can we not attack children or child like (horde) npcs? I can attack the level 1 farmer npc south of goldshire. I can attack any other peon I want to. I thought a company name Blizzard Entertainment made this game. The same Blizzard Entertainment that brought us the in game famous quote:
"Big, big cleaver killin all my friends. Couldn't stop it, had to run away. Ahhhhhh!!!", and you the adventure went down to defeat "The Butcher." People were hanging from hooks in this place.
Gettin soft on us or what?[ post edited by Quindan ]

In regards to this subject, I don't believe we've designed World of Warcraft differently than our previous titles. If you've played through Warcraft III, you should recall that children weren't valid targets for attack. And while the line you have quoted from Diablo's Butcher is a bit graphic in nature, you can find a number of similar examples in World of Warcraft - as we feel these small details enhance the mood when encountering a villain or creature. Allowing players to target something innocent like a child goes against the spirit of our design intention.
It's sad enough as it is to see people kill bunnies and cows...

Q u o t e: Only Sheep and cattle "just accept" things without questioning them.
And Orcs.

Q u o t e: He didn't just mention the line about the Butcher in Diablo, Eyonix. He mentioned the graphic visual scene of mutiliated human bodies hanging on meathooks in the Butcher's chamber. :)
I've played Diablo a number of times and remember the scene quite clearly. Again, there are a number of similar examples of gore and graphic dialogue in World of Warcraft, however, Diablo was rated Mature by the ESRB allowing us to be slightly more liberal in areas dealing with mature content, similar to what a rated 'R' movie might include vs. that of one rated 'PG-13'.
Despite this fact, there is a difference between (at least in our opinion), setting up a horrific scene to create a mood, and allowing the player killing of NPC children. As we've stated in the past, it simply detracts from that we're seeking to accomplish when building a fun world for our players.[ post edited by Eyonix ]
