We wanted to take a moment and alert the community to an e-mail scam which uses the fairly common tactic of forging the email header so that it appears to have come from somewhere or someone other than the actual source. These types of e-mails, often referred to as being "spoofed", are sent out in an attempt to trick unsuspecting players in to giving out their World of Warcraft account password. Most frequently, the body contains a message which threatens the player's account if he/she doesn't comply with the requested personal information, or will often go so far to make promises of very unrealistic rewards or benefits, such as free items, character transfers, etc..
Please remember, Blizzard Entertainment will never contact you for your World of Warcraft account password for any purpose. Should you come across an e-mail requesting such, we urge you to forward it directly to our Billing and Account Services Department at billing@blizzard.com.
Below is but one example of a recent e-mail scam which has surfaced. Please take a moment and become familiar with the text, as most look very similar.
Blizzard Support Group wishes greetings,
Currently we have major instability on most American and European World of Warcraft servers, therefore Blizzard Europe & Blizzard America have started a major maintenance to help correct these problems as quickly as possible. Many players complained about complete loss of data, items, even character/s. This is all due to a major intercontinental module malfunction. We hope that the modules will be working properly in the days that follow, but You may be having some problems (character/s deletion, loss of items, deletion of completed quests, loss of honor kills, deletion of talents etc.)
We deeply apologize about current problems on American and European servers and hope to fix them soon, thus we ask all users to submit their account information so that our administrators can create backups of Your character/s on a separated non-active server to avoid possible deletion of all Your account data during further module latency or server maintenance.
Please fill in the account information as follows and reply to this e-mail address:
1. List of realms where You have created Your character/s:
2. Account username:
3. Account password:
4. Contact e-mail:
5. Full name of the game owner:
We apologize again for the unpleasant situation caused by current server malfunctions, and promise to fix the problem soon. Until then feel free to play online since it has
no effect on possible damage to Your character/s for all data is recorded on the very server that is malfunctioning thus Your character/s may face deletion, loss of items, deletion of completed quests, loss of honor kills, deletion of talents etc.) even when You are offline. Thus we are alerting you in such short notice to take action. As written above, all administrators are working on data backup. For that reason we are asking our users to aid us in solving this mutual unpredicted problem.
Best regards,
Blizzard team Europe Inc.
Blizzard team America Inc.
