| |
I play on a PvE server and I have been reading up on the new RP-PvP server coming out, and I have to say that I am interested.
My question is, Do we say all the THEEs and THOUs like old England, or do we just have to stay in character. I mean, this game IS cartoony, and not very much like anything in RL history.
BTW, I play Alliance on PvE, so I think I'll be Horde in RP. I think it will be fun to be nasty.
Hammerdin....need I say more?

In my experience as a role player, the use of Elizabethan-era English in such activities is a misconception generally brought up by those souls dragged along to Renaissance Faires against their will, and perpetuated by those few players (usually playing either knights or nobility) that choose to use the modified language.
The truth of the matter is that hardly anyone utilizes Elizabethan during their role playing sessions. If it is used at all, it tends to be a way of representing overly formal or perhaps antiquated speech. While Azeroth is not Earth and thus is not bound by our history, we are still, as players, communicating in English; it is only natural that we use an older form of the language to represent certain manners of speech.
In short -- no, you don't have to speak in "thee"s and "thou"s. I'faith, the speech most simple and facile to thine ears shall suffice amongst the player who is hardest of core; thou shouldst simply use grammar and spelling most proper.

Heh, I never once claimed it was used properly. ;) Simply that the majority of players who do tend to use it do so as an antiquated or formal way of signifying speech, since it's assumed that the usual manner of speaking (normal English) is the common, everyday dialect.

Well, Lorna, for myself, the accent doesn't make the character, but it does serve as a reminder and a "helper" to keep in character. A character of mine will normally have a long, involved background and complicated personality... but if 'e talks inna way that's diff'rent from th' norm, it aids me in being consistently in-character.
It's not the whole character, but rather icing on the cake. :)
