Actually, it probably will be changed. The special characters are in place in the client because, internationally, those characters are in constant use. On the North American realms, however, use of such characters prevents easy communication with your character and as such those names are usually changed.

Actually, that may be the entire point of some people using such names.

Why force a name change in this case? Does it violate naming restrictions or something?

Yes, technically it falls under the Gibberish clause when it is changed. Practically, however, such changes are done to facilitate communication in what is a community-based online game. If you cannot easily use the communication tools given to speak with another player, there is a problem.

Yes but why can't Blizzard just program it so the accents can be easily entered but all WoW looks at is the letter, and ignores any accents. This way when someone uses an accent in their name the players all see it but it makes no difference if you type the name normally or with the accent in communications.

You still have your naming policy intact and people, like those in Quebec Canada who are allowed to play on North American servers, get to use accents in their name.

Just wondering if that could be done and why its not being done if it can be.

They're recognized as different characters by the name filter, for one (since, well, they are different characters). Remember also that the main reason that folks tend to use accented characters is because the name without accents is already taken.

For example, I want to use Caydiem in game. It's already taken by another player, so I use Caydiëm. Under your system, it would cause no end of confusion if the two of us were online at the same time, since we're different characters.

We have no plans to institute such a system at this time.

Because those characters are used all the time in non-English WoW clients, and are legal on their servers. The programmers seem to be hesitant about making big changes in our version of WoW that wouldn't let us do that, when they can't do it for other versions of the game.

What Faizaniel says is correct.
