Cay, or any CM that is on, has this position been filled? I no longer see it on the list of jobs :(
On that note, care to take a peek at http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.aspx?fn=wow-general&t=3563638&tmp=1#post3563638 too? :) Feel free to not answer to it though. I'm mostly curious about the job :P

I understand where you're coming from on the global front, but I'll tell you from personal experience that it's much better to sit down with a developer face-to-face in an informal environment and chat as two gamers about a situation than it would to telecommute. You lose so much when communicating across distances: if through text, all context in tone of voice and body language is gone; if voice, that body language is still missing; and even if you're seeing their face, the energy conveyed in a conversation with someone in the same room simply isn't there.
In addition to scheduled meetings, it's hard to replicate, say, catching a developer when he's been away from his desk a while (thus not privy to phone or text communication) and asking a couple questions off the cuff. It's certainly possible to telecommute with this job, but I'll guarantee they wouldn't get the information we do with all the various meetings and impromptu invites that occur.
As for the position, well, we'll see how things go... :)

Q u o t e: I'm curious as to why GM's require the same treatment in regards to living in Irvine, wouldn't a GM still be able to receive as much information as they are required to do their job at home, or are all Blizzard employees regardless of position required to attend weekly/monthly meetings?
Actually, GMs meet daily prior to beginning work so that everyone is caught up on the issues of the moment. Keep in mind, also, that the GMs use tools that can be extremely powerful (such as reimbursing lost items)... these tools, for security purposes, are only available within our offices. It is far easier to keep track of such when everyone's in the same space than if the people -- and the software -- are scattered across the world.
Does that make sense? :)
