So I'm a warlock, and I've pretty much gotten used to slowing my horse down (or even walking it backwards) just to make sure that my felhunter doesn't disappear into the nether realm and I don't lose a shard.
However, I noticed that Orphans have absolutely no problem keeping up with me. My question is this: If pet pathing was serioulsy being looked into like Blizzard has implied for *months* now, why is it that a silly orphan that will be in the game for 1 week only can keep up with me when my pet can't?
cmon blizz, just replace my felhunter's code with your orphan code and I'll be happy.

All pets already have speed greater than players on mounts of any kind.
Combat pets have to follow the rules of pathing and line of sight, etc, even when they are not in combat.
Non-combat pets are not tied down by these restrictions.

Q u o t e: Then why do they fall behind?
Why does my Panda disappear into the distance behind me while I'm running in a straight line?
Never a straight answer outta you people...
A non-combat pets too far behind, and they'll say, "ignore terrain and just get to my master."

I feel the need to elaborate on what Tyren said.
First, what he said is true -- pets do functionally move faster than their masters (there is a modifier set, so they're always supposed to move X% faster than you are, thus allowing you to keep a pet on a mount), and this is done in order to prevent the dismissal of pets when running long distances.
However...
There are indeed certain pathing issues and problems surrounding pets that make them fall behind. This is not ignored by the development team -- they are working on the various problems therein. The issue there, however, is it isn't a simple fix, and requires a great deal of work and testing.
So to sum up:
Pets do in fact have a modifier that makes them run faster than their masters.
While we have fixed some pathing problems with pets, some still remain, however, and this causes them to fall behind.

[Edit]
I apologize for the great misunderstanding this post has caused. Let me extrapolate:
Because combat pets have a great deal of technical hurdles, such as pathing, line of sight, and a great deal more issues they must calculate in order to navigate toward their owner, they do get lost.
In that sense, it's not a matter of the speed of the pet, which was the point I was trying to make.[ post edited by Tyren ]
