I was just wondering. I am fairly sure that many if not all GMs, community rep, dev or even manager out there also plays a normal character, is probably part of a guild and chats with other players like everyone else.
What do you do when you see Blizzard getting trashed in guildchat or when people in your PUG complain about some crazy mistakes GMs made or vent their anger at Blizz or GMs when some encounter got bugged... Or even worse, your Blizz name gets specifically named in a rant.
Defend it? Gnash your teeth in silent anger? Happily join them in the rant?
Tell us your stories about moments when you wanted to shout out that you are a GM and you don't like what they just said about you. Or stories when work collided with being a player.

All of us at Blizzard indeed play with normal characters on the normal realms, be it PvP, PvE, RP or RP-PvP realms. We play in private when we are not at work and we play for having fun like the rest of you, and therefore it can definitely be a dilemma and of some frustration when such a discussion takes place in-game. But personally I always try to stay as neutral as possible in those kinds of discussions and I am fairly sure that all of my colleagues do the very same thing.
Sure there have been situations where I would have liked to reveal my identity as a Blizzard employee in-game in order to calm people down and to assure them that we actually do care about our players and that we really are working on fixing those issues that they complain about.
As a blizzard employee I have the unique opportunity to see things from both the players' point of view and blizzards point of view, and this can both be a curse as well as a blessing. :-)

Q u o t e: What I would like to know from a job point of view is whether being a GM allows you time to attend raids which usually take place at 8pm or so GT. I know that there are 3 shifts and wondered if someone applynig for a position would be able to maintain current raiding times.
As far as I am aware the Game Masters who likes to raid manages to do so just fine, but if you apply for a job as a Game Master and you happen to get the job, then it is possible that you need to adjust a bit since you most likely won't always be able to raid at a specific time every week.[ post edited by Vaneras ]

Q u o t e: Vaneras, as you admitted being a wow player yourself, i was wondering the following:
Perhaps you are a hunter (avatar picture). How do you deal with the ranged shot bug? Wouldn't you stand on your chair and yell in the GM hall: "Will somebody please fiiixxx this stupid bug?!11!oneleven".
And how do you feel, when you see the Auction House flooded with high lvl items that were farmed by people that abuse wow.
How do you respond to these scenario's. I can only imagine....
As a player I of course find these things annoying as well, and I do report these things to the Game Masters as everyone else.
But here it is a blessing to be a Blizzard employee since I can actually see that reported bugs are being forwarded to the relevant people in order to have them fixed in some future patch or hotfix, and I can see that those naughty players who do bad things are being dealt with. But some of these things take time and I can most surely understand the many frustrated in-game remarks and forum posts from players, because they cannot see the things that I have access to as a Blizzard employee, and thus it can look like that nothing or very little is being done to fix those kind of issues.

Q u o t e: When you get ganked do you wish you could use .kill? :P I think to be honest, it's only natural for gm's, cm's, devs etc to play the game in a normal way - but did they use omgwtfhax to level? ;)
Being ganked is part of the game, so I really have nothing against that even though it can be annoying at times. If somebody corpsecamps me then I usually just log into another character and play that one instead... I mean if a guy like to sit and look at my corpse for an hour, then who am I to stop him ;-)

Maybe I can get a few tips on what to do with any of my level 60s, since I also don't have the time to raid. ;)
Well I know that some Game Masters prefer to do PvP instead of raiding :-)
Others like to level up several characters and others again like to grind reputation for various factions in order to get rare epic stuff :-)

Yes I do :-)
My colleagues and I do discuss issues we come across ourselves and of course also issues brought up by players, and we constantly forward these things to the relevant departments and teams in blizzard depending on the nature of the issue being discussed.

Q u o t e: A serious question: If you know about all these issues, why aren't they being fixed? I mean, there are bugs that have existed since the game itself started that still have yet to be fixed.
They are being fixed, and if they have not been fixed yet, then they will be at some time.
Please try to understand that a game like World of Warcraft is an enormous project that is constantly being worked on, and therefore some things take priority over others and yet other things are very complex and therefore take time to fix. That is why you see some things fixed and others not, even though they have been present in the game for some time.
Q u o t e: You say you forward all these issues to the developers and you claim you are indeed in touch with the players and you know about all the stuff we experience on a day to day basis, yet you still nerf great potions like Spirit of Zanza and even make it unique (!!!) and still do very odd stuff which makes no sense other than trying piss players off: Forcing players to regrind rank 14 for new weapons, requiring stupid materials for Tier 3 items (as if the effort and preparation required to beat the encounters wasn't enough), forcing people to grind stupid factions for months and later nerfing the grind (Zul'Gurup).
Yes I forward issues and feedback to the developers (and other teams in blizzard as well depending on the nature of the issue at hand) and yes I play the game just like you do, but I'm afraid that you are confusing me with a developer, which I am not. I do not make the decisions about changes in the game, and I have no part in the design decisions made by the developers.
I am fully aware that some players get frustrated and in some cases outright angry when changes are made to the game, but I can assure you that changes are made for a good reason. If you think that the sole purpose of the developers is to annoy you at a personal level by changing the things that you happen to like in the game, then I'm afraid that you are sadly mistaken. Some design decisions are tough indeed, because some people get affected by them in negative way in the short run, but the changes made by the developers are always done for a good reason.
Q u o t e: If you are indeed trying to make this game as FUN as possible, why are you constantly proving the opposite every single patch?
Maybe you indeed don't share the same idea of fun as the players do? Maybe you don't understand the preparation and effort some of your raid encounters require?
The game is indeed supposed to be as fun as possibly for everybody who plays it, and the game is being constantly developed and modified. It is unavoidable that people like some content more than other, and that some people like some changes more than other and the reason for this is that people are different. It is not an easy thing to satisfy everyone, because per definition, that is impossible since everybody is unique in their own way.
I can gather from your post that you are not at all satisfied with the current state of the game and that you think it is being destroyed by the people who make it. Those thoughts of yours can't make me stop thinking that you should maybe step back and take a look at your motives for playing, because if you are not having fun, and you honestly think that every patch makes the game worse and that it is no longer possible to have any kind of enjoyment while playing it, then I really don't see a reason to play.

I have characters on new realms as well as old realms, and of course there sometimes is a difference in performance. I will not lie... Latency and disconnects are very frustrating, especially when it happens at a key moment in the game, but for me it never seems as bad compared to what others have. I have indeed had lag spikes now and then, but I have never gone above 1500ms and I have had disconnects, but never 20 times and hour.
I would like to add that we are working as hard as we can to prevent and eliminate problems causing latency and disconnections, but sometimes these problems come from outside our network from some other ISP having routing issues, and then it can unfortunately take some time before the problems are resolved.

I would like to add that we are working as hard as we can to prevent and eliminate problems causing latency and disconnections, but sometimes these problems come from outside our network from some other ISP having routing issues, and then it can unfortunately take some time before the problems are resolved.[ post edited by Vaneras ]

Q u o t e: hey van, if you lose to a certain class in pvp alot of times dont you ever think like 'damnit we gotta nerf that class' and what happens when you do?
Sure I have a tough time against some classes more than others, but I have not yet reached a point where I can claim that certain classes most surely are overpowered and must be nerfed ASAP.
I guess it all comes down to knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your class and what to do in what situation when you face your enemy. I see many players in-game who play well, but they always do the same moves and attack combinations in all situations no matter what class they fight, and if you do that, then it is obvious that you will have a tough time against those classes that have a specific advantage against you.
But again all classes are quite different from each other and some of them are really strong in mass PvP where others are better in 1 vs. 1.

Q u o t e: So Vaneras, what do your guild think you work as? They've probably asked at some point, and you can't tell them you're a CM, but even if you did, they wouldn't believe you.
So what job does your guild think you have? :)
They have never really asked exactly what I do and I have never really told them either. All they know is that I work and I have flexible work hours :-)

Q u o t e: This post is not on topic, I apologise
I know you are not a developer, please know I am not your average forum fanboy, I was referring to you = blizzard.
Good to know, but this was not that clear in your original post. I am aware that you are not a "fanboi" and to me I must say that you sound more like being quite the opposite actually :-)
Q u o t e: But when you see 3 threads on EU and US forums, all with 30 pages of people going "What are you doing, this makes no sense!", does that not make you think "Ok guys, this change might not be so good, we might have to reconsider it or find another solution"
When we see a 30-50 page thread full of complaints about a specific change in the game, we are of course aware that someone is not happy. And of course we do forward the concerns from those threads even though it is not always certain that you will see an immediate response from us.
But try to see it from another perspective. Those threads tend to be created and maintained by a very angry group of people consisting of anywhere between 50 -- 500 people who are posting, and maybe a few hundreds to a few thousands more who are reading, but refrain from posting. These people are angry because the change in question affects their game play in a very immediate and negative way, but they have not yet given themselves time to look at the bigger picture and have not yet started to look for new ways to adapt. Frustrated people sometimes complain and yell before they begin looking for a solution to their problem, and because of that they make way more noise than people who are content or even happy. In World of Warcraft, content and happy people usually spend their time playing, whereas angry people yell at us on the forums, in emails and even on the phone at our tech support and billing people. Thus a relatively small group of people seem to be way larger than they really are. My point is that if a change is really so bad that it truly destroys the game and does not serve a greater good, then we would see way more activity on the forums, in our emails and even on the phones.
Does this mean that the angry people who write and maintain angry threads on the forums are wrong? Not necessarily, but then again…It is unfortunately very hard to keep everybody happy, and sometimes sacrifices have to be made in order to serve a greater good.
Does it mean that Blizzard should not give feedback to those angry people who write and maintain angry threads on the forums? Not at all… We should give feedback in one form or another, and I must acknowledge that unfortunately this is where we sometimes fail.
Q u o t e: I realise you might not be able to answer that, since you are not part of those meetings, but when you let these kind of threads pass by unanswered, it makes people very disillusioned about the state of the game. Everyone is screaming "Look at this Blizzard, just look at it and reconsider" and you just ignore it (or at least give the perception of ignoring it, by not answering).
I partially agree on this, but unfortunately we do not always have the means to answer concerns from such a thread and thus they will sometimes stay unanswered for a while, at least until we actually have some valid information to give. I can understand the frustration from those who really seek a response to their concerns in such threads, and again I agree that we should maybe post more often in them, even though we may not have any actual information on the issue in question.
Q u o t e: Example: You nerf Spirit of Zanza, why?... why? Give us a reason, tell us what was wrong with it. You never argue the changes you make, you just make them.
I know that this is one of the questions you really, really want answered, but unfortunately I cannot relieve you of your pain on this matter. The change was indeed made and it was done for a good reason, but I do not have any specific information on this particular change.
Q u o t e: Materials for Tier 3? Who came up with that? I pay around 60g every day for wiping on C'Thun already, and I will pay more than that for learning Naxx, and now I have to PAY an extra total of 400g+ for the reward of my efforts aswell? WHY? On top of that you nerfed the money dropped from bosses aswell, I make more money doing a full MC run, than I do on a AQ40 run, without any deaths. Logic flawed?
Again I have no specifics on the exact reasons behind the design decisions on this matter. But then again Naxxramas is indeed made for those power gamers, who truly put in an extreme and in some cases mind boggling amount of time and effort into acquiring that special equipment. Tier 3 equipment is not supposed to be hard to get, it is supposed to be very hard to get. I would maybe even say that Tier 3 gear will be so very hard to get, so that MC, BWL and AQ40 gear will not loose its appeal by being considered obsolete or even useless, just because better gear becomes available.
Q u o t e: Do these arguments or comments escape you?
Not at all, but please let me ask you the same question in return. Do the arguments or comments that I presented to you escape you?
Q u o t e: That's taking the easy way out of a tough question :)
Maybe so, but that doesn't mean that the answer given is less valid.
Q u o t e: I love the game; don't get me wrong, I've invested tons of time and effort in to it, but some of the things you do make me consider why I bother to play.
I am really glad to hear that you love the game, and I think that it is both great and impressive that you have spent the time and effort that you have. But when you start thinking about why you even bother to play, then it sounds to me like the game has lost its appeal to you and it is no longer fun for you to play. And if the game is no longer fun for you, then I begin to wonder about why exactly you play the game.
Q u o t e: Anyway, I'm just ranting here, I realise you are not in a position to answer these questions, but what other choice do I have to be heard? "Please redirect these questions to the suggestion forum where they will be on page 4 in 2 hours between the ‘omg nerf shamans' posts?". I'm stuck on the EU forums, far away from anyone in Blizzard who can make a difference (Tigole, Slouken, etc.).
That is ok… It can't all be sugar and spice. I can understand that giving feedback to the people who make the game can seem like an insurmountable task, but please rest assured that we do listen and we do forward your feedback. I would say that you have made your point very clear. I am sorry if I maybe was a bit blunt with you, but that was only because I thought that your way of writing was a bit too unnecessarily aggressive and biased.
Q u o t e: My goal is not giving you a hard time, I apologise if you perceived it that way.
I know that you were just venting and I can assure you that I took no offence, so there is no need to apologize :-)

There is no class that I really hate, but there are classes that I find more boring than others. I will not go into more detail on this, because I do not want to make some players think that I do not like them simply because they play a class I personally find less fun :-)

Q u o t e: Say Vaneras.. Where does "Vaneras" origin from?
Vaneras was a name I came up with when I was looking for a name for my avatar shortly after I got this job. I wanted a name that was easy to pronounce and remember for as many nationalities as possible. I had a list containing something like 50 possible names and I showed this list to people from around 10-12 different nationalities, who were working here at the offices at the time, and I was asking them to point out the name that seemed most appealing to them. After this the list was reduced to about 3 names, where I then chose Vaneras for my avatar :-)
Q u o t e: Something you have been using for quite a while on other forums as well, before you became a Blizzard employee or anything like that?
Vaneras is a name I came up with for this job. I was using different names on other forums before I got this job.

Q u o t e: Vaneras, may I ask why you picked a Dwarf Hunter as your avatar?
I chose a Dwarf Hunter because that is my absolute favorite race/class combination in the game. I have always loved dwarf characters in fantasy games and role-playing games, and the Dwarves in World of Warcraft are nothing less than spectacular. The Dwarf in the World of Warcraft intro movie owns all by the way :-)
Many people have commented on the gear that my avatar is wearing, which is not that high level. In fact the gear on my avatar is level 30-40ish, and that is actually very much on purpose, because I always though that hunters looked best in leather gear at those levels :-)
Q u o t e: Was it your first character or were you forced to by Thundgot? *grin*
Thundgot is a nice guy and would never do such a thing :-)

The Blizzard building is located not so far outside of Paris to the South West. The building itself is nothing spectacularly special I would say, but it is a decent sized office building made traditionally of concrete, steel and glass. I unfortunately have no pictures to show you :-)

Q u o t e: What I am curious about is that if a GM does his 11th run on a boss but still haven't had their item drop... Could they then alter the coding to get their beloved item?
No.
Q u o t e: Are they allowed to get a charatcher with full tier 2 epic gear or is that strictly forbidden?
It is not forbidden as long as they earn it the same way as everybody else. None of us gets premade über characters transferred to our accounts just because we work for Blizzard.
Q u o t e: If they have a girlfriend/boyfriend who plays WOW are they allowed to add tiny hearts around her on valentines day?
No.
But they would probably be more popular with their girlfriends if they gave her some flowers, some chocolate and maybe even a fancy dinner somewhere :-)
(Sorry I didn't mention anything about boyfriends, but I do not know what girls are supposed to give their boyfriends on valentines day)
Q u o t e: Must be hard to be a GM since there are so many fun things they can do but perhaps aren't allowed to do.
Maybe so, but without rules there would be chaos.
Q u o t e: I kinda look at them like Neo in Matrix but in Azeroth.

Q u o t e: But is this really a solution? Once you beat an encounter and the boss is dead, you have the item needed for your set part, what is left is some expensive materials anyone can buy in the Auction House, how is that slowing down people getting Tier 3? how is that doing anything but adding a cost to an already hard earned item?
I will not get into a discussion whether or not if it is a good solution, but this is indeed a hot topic that many people have different opinions on. What is certain is that getting Tier 3 items will require a greater effort than getting the previous Tier 1 and 2 sets, and that is something that the most dedicated power gamers usually want; Something truly great that takes way more time, effort and gold to achieve than the more traditional end-game raids where you usually get rewarded right after you down the boss.
Q u o t e: and by trying to fix this, however hard it would be, you would gain a happier community.

Q u o t e: vaneras you are browsing the forums alot for your work, dont you ever get tired of locking topics and from people who just flame blizzard/CM's ?
It can be boring at times, but I do not take it personally. In most cases I can understand why people do this, so I do not hold a grudge.
Q u o t e: and if you see this guy idling in IF with full AQ/bwl gear, isnt it tempting to make a account and just stuff it with epic gear, and have fun dueling outside IF ?
Not really. I would not find it as rewarding if I did not earn the eqipment the proper way. BTW I cannot just make such an account even if I wanted to :-)

Q u o t e: Fantastic to get an active discussion on WoW and one of the CM's.. thanks for spending the time doing this..
Now this is something thats been rattling ym cage for a long time.. Would you be able to pass the idea up a bit, or give feedback..
There are people out there who don't have time for run after run, I've got over 40 days /played on my toon. The reason I hevrn't levelled is I had to spend a LOT of time on my laptop when my gaming system commited suicide, meaning I was out for the count in going into BG's and such..
But, back on topic.. We have the option saying how many HK's and DK's we have. Why not a "Scroll of honor" saying what big mobs we've sucessfully downed, and how many times?..
Also, the instances where people do them so many times and don't get their drops.. I know it's down to the "Luck of the draw" and such.. but wouldn't it be better to have a more specific idea whats dropping from bosses BEFORE you commit to a 4 hour run, to find you get nothing but a bit of gold and some Vendorcrap..
I know certain bosses drop certain bits of gear.. but it seems that someone might get 3 runs and have the same item drop every time.. would there be a way to make the loot more "intelligent" on major boss encounters?
I have seen suggestions an ideas like these before and those has been forwarded to the developers. Unfortunately I do not currently have the possibility to inform you if they will actually use anything from these ideas. We will for sure post the news if the developers choose to implement things like this. I personally think that these are interesting suggestions.
Q u o t e: Glad to have someone to actually talk with too.. Just out of curiousity too.. you say you played every class? Have you played them all to 60? or have you abandoned some halfway as they just don't appeal to you?
I have characters of all classes yes, but I have not played them all to 60. However if we combine the characters from everyone of the CMs, then we have a level 60 of each class :-)

Q u o t e: How do you, or GM's, submit suggestions to the Developers? Are there forms to work out or do you fold paper airplanes and chuck them out the window?
We have procedures for these things sure, but nothing really complicated. Usually it involves sending an email or two :-)
Q u o t e: Have you ever ticketed to a GM on your normal account, just to get an extremely unsatisfying response? (Example: I reported a bug with the Thunderfury proc a couple of days ago and the GM insisted that I should post in the suggestions forum, and that CM's would post there as well. I couldn't convince him I was filing a bug report and not a suggestion) How do you respond then? I've had a lengthy talk with a GM once and he said that he cannot reveal his GM-ness in a ticket, nor that he gets priority in the queue.
I have sent plenty of tickets to the GM over time, and must admit that I have never had any real problems with the responses I have received. At some time early last year I had a misunderstanding with a Game Master who thought I was reporting a bug, but then I just created a new ticket where I changed my wording of the problem. (I had a problem with an item that I couldn't loot)
Q u o t e: And lastly, a remark. I saw you answered a couple of questions regarding the Zanza-nerf with "I'm not a developer so I can't really answer the why question". You gotta understand that "the omg blue response!!" is as close as we players can get to Blizzard officials. That's why we tend to regard CM/GM's as the ones with power and influence, and directly ask you for game changes. Also, changes are often made with the "I'm not sure at this time why we made the change but it's gotta be good for something", such as the Defense nerf (-33% anyone?) or the recent Mind Control Cap nerf (out of combat only). However the reason is never explained in hindsight, when more information is available. As such, players get the impression that you are indeed, nerfing fun. If you could get a dev's reasoning on why it had to happen, such as a game breaking possibility with the old MC cap, then I'm sure we'd all be more satisfied.
I can completely follow your point of view on this one, and I agree with you that it can be very frustrating when no immediate reason for a change is given. Some times we don't have the info at hand when we need it and it sometimes can take some time before we get the info we need to be able to answer your questions. We will of course try to improve ourselves on this matter.

Don't you agree that "8D" has to be one of the cooler emoticons? Beats :-) i think.
:-) Owns all... This is not something that can even be remotely discussed. It is an indisputable fact!
Q u o t e: And i've been to denmark once. Do you like "guf"?
I don't at least. Been asking a lot of guildies this aswell, i can't understand how it can be found tasteful.
I do like "Guf" a lot actually, but I hate it when I spill some on my hands and they become all sticky.
To those of you who do not know this "Guf", is a topping used for ice cream in Denmark and it is very sweet.
Q u o t e: Also i met thundgot at TG.. Do you think your hunter would beat his mage in a duel?

Q u o t e: Well since everyone is shooting questions and getting answered, I want to ask Vaneras something as well.
Did you enjoy playing 1-60 more than 60+ or the other way around. This is a question that I have debated with many friends and most of them say 60+ is better because the "real" game starts there. I, however, think the game basicly ends at 60. Or at least the fun part. After that there is no more "ding" "gratz!111one", your gear improves with one item per month and you farm the same zones/instanses all day. More like a job eh?
Well I would say that it is like two completely different games. I loved the time leveling up for sure and I must say that this was my favorite part of the game. I was never in a hurry to level up and I always tried to see as many things as possible before maxing out. Endgame becomes more demanding and time consuming for sure, but for me personally I don't have a problem with that since I still enjoy the game. I still have other characters that I am still leveling up :-)

Q u o t e: Dont you find a bit of the "magic" is lost as a regular player when you know all the internal workings of the game?
I can hardly claim that I know all the internal workings, but to answer your question, I don't feel that the "magic" is lost, but of course playing the game today feels very different compared to when I started. In the beginning every little thing in the game was so spectacular and it had be checked out. I could spend hours just walking around and admiring the feel of the game, be it graphics, sound, music, gameplay, etc. :-)
Q u o t e: I used to GM on a MUD and I certainly found it spoiled alot of the fun of being a normal player. I was able to do live-quests for players (switching into NPCs etc), which ensured I could still have fun - but the regular player part was never the same.
I could imagine for sure, but I have never done that in World of Warcraft :-)

Q u o t e: Excellent thread. When you're done here, prune it archive it and send copies to US and China. =)
Anyhow, to the questions:
How much activity and general knowledge of the game is required for a CS position at Blizzard; what can be expected from the average GM/CM? Would the requirements for a developer be similar?
I'm kinda curious about this since I'm aiming for a career in game development but facing the dilemma between loving extensive games and requiring to attain extensive first-hand knowledge of such games to design them. When I eventually get full-time employment I imagine it would be very difficult to devote the needed playing time for MMOs in particular. I guess many of us have had conversations where we basically had to educate GMs on parts of the game, though their intentions and behavior were good, and I'd really not want to end up in such a position.
I cannot tell you about the requirements for being a developer, because that is a thing that is different from company to company. And since I am not a developer myself, I feel that I do not know enough about it to actually tell you about the requirements needed for such a job.
Regarding the requirements for working as a GM or a CM, then it is maybe worth looking at this page, where you should be able to find more specifics on this :-)
http://www.blizzard.co.uk/jobopp/index.shtml
Q u o t e: Do you assign GMs different areas of responsibility? Obviously they can't master every aspect of the game and some have impressive knowledge of the intricacies of raiding while others appear to never have set foot in MC.
The Game Master of course do have different areas of responsibilities and assignments, but this is not something I will get into details about.
Q u o t e: Are any of the current Blizzard employees managing to lead big guilds on the side?
Depends on what you mean by big ;-)
No but I know one or two Blizzard employees that are running their own guild, and one of them is for sure is a good sized guild. (No, I am not a member of it) I cannot tell you for sure, because I am honestly not keeping track on what and how my colleagues are playing the game
Q u o t e: To what extent do Blizzard employees use UI modifications? Do you have a policy on this?
They are pretty much a part of the game but I imagine it could be counterproductive in situations. I've occasionally found myself offering incorrect advice because I've taken some AddOns for granted and forgotten the defaults, nor even gotten a proper impression of how the default UI has developed over time.
The policy for us is the same as it is for you. Some of us use add-ons, some of us don't. I use a few myself, but nothing extraordinary.
Q u o t e: Could you give an update on how things are looking for the GRP? We haven't heard much since the plans were announced 3 months ago.
You are right. It has been a while since we last had an update on this, but we should have some news on this soon.
Q u o t e: Is there any chance you could give slightly better notice before releasing new patches?
How long notice do you expect (completely non-comitting guess AKA not at all a promise ;)) we'll have before the massive 1.11 goes live?
It can be hell for guild administrations to suddenly find that a patch will be coming out the next morning at reset. I imagine it must be even worse for the American guilds.
We try to provide the news about a patch release as early as possible, but we will of course try to see if there is something we can do to improve the communication on these matters :-)

Q u o t e: Since you know pretty much about the background of WoW and also it's game mechanics... i wonder if you could really enjoy end game raiding at it's best.
For example, your guild starts doing BWL, i think you could easily tell them all the leet tacs and get them anywhere in virtually no time at all, ofcourse it still depends on the skill of your guild wether you progress quickly or not, but you COULD bring in some very critical information that could speed things up very radically.
Just wondering though... i guess that once your guild commences a new encounter you stay quiet and listen to their story's, whilst knowing what will happen with the tacs they have just come up with? :P I'm not saying you are helping your guild by giving them background information, but it must be frustrating sometimes that you know your guild will fail whilst you COULD do something about it... for example, (i'm do not know where your guild is in raiding progress ofc.) doing nefarian, and telling them how to manage stage 1 and stuff...
When a new instance with new encounters is being released, I do not know anything about the strategies required for actually defeating those encounters. When I go against them for the first time, I am just as inexperienced on that encounter like everyone else.
I may know more about the content in an instance than others when it is being released, but I know nothing about how to actually go through it. And I would not have it any way if I had the choice :-)

Q u o t e: I want to ask a question too!
You say that you have several other characters (well don't we all :P), do you ever get tired of doing the same quests over and over? I've levelled a mage and a priest to sixty and now when I level my warrior I find it kinda boring to do the same quests again. Have you had the same feeling?
Not that much no. Sometimes I like knowing where to go and what to do, but then again I guess the charm of doing new and exiting quests is a bit lost :-)

Q u o t e: Great post, would there be any chance of one like this appearing on a more regluar basis ?
Well I most certainly hope so. I mean this one wasn't really planned for; it was just something spontaneous that seemed like a fun thing to do.
Q u o t e: Something like once a month yourself, Aeus or Thundy open a general questions thread for 2 or 3 days to answer questions in this way. You could rotate so that this month you've done it so next month one of the others could do it.
It is a good suggestion, and I will most surely bring it up to discussion with the rest of the team :-)
Q u o t e: btw. Are there any other MMORPG's you would play at home or do you feel some sort of loyalty to Blizz and play only WoW. Persona;;y I'm gutted that the Dune one got cancelled, but bett for Blizz as they get my cash instead :-)
I have been playing others MMORPG's before this one, but I quit those long ago before I even got this job. World of Warcraft is the only game in this genre that I currently play.

Q u o t e: Vaneras, do you as proud dwarf player agree with a fellow inhabitant of the great city of Ironforge, that we should break off our alliance with the treacherous night elf race?
History has already proven that they don't like to help us! The only reason they helped out us smaller races, was because one of us was foolish enough to help them out once, so the night elves felt obligated to aid us while the horde was driving us back into the once proud kingdom of Lordearon!
All they do nowadays is hop around like bunny's, use their pointy ears to sting us, pat gnomes, sit on dwarves.. We need to free ourselves from this surpression!
Every dwarf and gnome should know by now what kind of faulty creatures the night elves are.. Everytime i meet one a feeling grows stronger in my heart.. They were corrupted by the Burning Legion to annoy us! I will do everything i can to show their dark scheme's to the world, so we can rid them from Azeroth for the rest of our times.
So Vaneras, what do you say. Let's pick up our arms and slay them all! If only it were possible :( for some reason i am not allowed to attack them and take revenge for the daily annoyances :(
The night elves still have their uses, so in my opinion it is still to soon to say if they should be banished from the alliance or not. Let's monitor the situation for a while still before we decide what to do ;-)

Several of my colleagues here are also my good friends, so sure we spend time together having fun after work hours. Tonight for an example we are going to watch some football and maybe even have a beer or two :-)

Q u o t e: This is probably my one time opportunity to actually get a blue response, so here goes:
As you probably do not know, it is my personal quest to get named non-combat pets and/or mounts (the pet thing is most important to me).
I would love to actually be able to name my pet (and perhaps mount). How are we supposed to bond with a pet if the player next to you has the same one? I have the luck of having the Collectors Edition, so there aren't many people with a zergling, but still I would love to name it... why can hunters name their combat pets but we cant name our non-combat pets? :(
Can you tell me if this has ever been sent through to the developers (and if not, would you please do so? :P)?
I would personally like this feature myself as well. This is one out of many suggestions that has been forwarded to the developers by the way, but I have no clue if and when they are going to include it in the game.

Q u o t e: Forgive me if this was already asked and answered, but what do the other CMs (i.e. Thundgot and Aeus) do whenever it's just yourself keeping order on the forums? I was under the general belief that it was at least one of you taking turns or working the same shifts throughout the day. So what do the Forsaken and Goblin do when they're not around here, if you don't mind/are not endangered by answering?
Our work hours do change, but basically we pretty much keep an eye on the forums and other things all the time. I really cannot get into specifics on this though :-)
The Goblin and The Forsaken have complete lives of their own and even though we also spend time together now and then after work, I think it would be better if they were the ones to tell their story. After all I have now spent 19 pages on answering questions about me, and I don't think I will be able to answer questions for another 19 pages about them and their lives. Let's see if they will pop in here and share some stories with us all :-)

Q u o t e: Great thread, you shouldnt spoil us with too much replies tho cos when something bad happens and there is silence everyone will go "wtf u spammed that 'Life as a gamer' thread but dont care about <not really important issue>!!" ;)
I do not feel that I am spoiling you. Today I have some time to chit chat with you guys, and I think that is a fun thing to do :-)
It can most surely be frustrating for players sometimes when we only seem to be posting in less serious threads, but then again posting in such threads really don't require that much work. When we post in more serious threads we have to be 100% sure that what we say is correct, and therefore it can take some time and effort before we actually are ready to post.
Q u o t e: A question then, what do you think about the PTRs revealing content? I mean people are already progressing through Naxx with PUGs. You might argue that its a PTR, its there for testing, but I think that some content should remain hidden. Spoilers suck!
Dont they have testers of their own over there at blizzard?
I can see your point for saying this, but then again we need to make sure that things are working as intended before we release them (This is not an invitation for random flames by the way ;-)). But please remember that you are not forced to go see the new content on the PTRs before release. You can avoid it and thus go adventuring when it is released :-)
Q u o t e: Thanks for reading
EDIT: Oh, and who do you think will win the WC? ;)
It is my pleasure :-)
I think it is too early to say who will win the WC, but I do think that Germany has a good chance (That opinion might change soon though ;-))[ post edited by Vaneras ]

Q u o t e: First of all: THX 100 TIMES for doing this Vaneras, this is improving the relation between blizzard and players... trust me. I never thought that some day a Blizzard Representant would come to the forums answering all the stuff. I'm only sorry that this type of action took more than a year to come, but THX FOR THIS any way, im really happy!!
Well I am happy that you are happy. I will try to make things like this happen more often :-)
Q u o t e: I have 2 qwestions:
A) Do u think that the game is well balanced between aliance and horde?(i know this is a ruff qwestion... if u don't want to answer it just say: "no comments")
I think the game is fairly balanced between the factions, but I do think the Alliance is a bit stronger on the PvE side whereas Horde is a bit stronger when it comes to PvP. But that is just my personal opinion of what I see in-game.
Q u o t e: B) Is there something that you really really would like to see in game and that is not implemented yet? If yes, tell me just 1 or 2 things. (like fighting while mounted or something ike that)
I would love to see mounted combat as well by the way :-)
There are plenty of things that I would like to see in-game. I would personally love to see player or guild housing, at least to some degree, but I think that the thing I would love to see the most is the possibility to use war machines and siege equipment in battles a bit like what we see in the Battlefield FPS games. For an example it could be so cool to be able to drive a steamtank into battle, or fly over the heads of your enemies in one of those airplanes seen on the Ironforge airport.
Q u o t e: Sorry for my bad english, but english is not my main spoken language (portuguese btw).
No need to be sorry about your English. You made yourself clear perfectly well :-)

Q u o t e: Respect to you Vaneras for taking the time to answer questions that people have. It's nice to see.
Been thinking hard on a question that'd be interesting enough to get a good reply. I couldn't think of one, so I would like to ask if there's ever been a time when someone at the office has been excited over something they've seen or heard that a guild has accomplished in game?
Like really excited, screaming something along the lines of "OMG! Dudes and dudettes! look at this!! OMG!" :)
I'm bored...
Sure. If we see something really cool that was achieved by someone or some guild in-game, then we are of course thrilled about it and want to show it to everybody else here at the office :-)

Is it normal for GM's/CM's to watch "europe firsts?" By that I mean, watching a guild take down a boss for the first time in Europe?
If this is true, do you watch it on bigscreen during breaks or what?
Keep it up!

Q u o t e: I must say is that one thing I wish more then a new instance, new races, new legendaries is more feedback from blue on important issues. I know you said that you would like it to and you have to make sure what you say is 100% correct. Even so, issues like class downfalls or things we think need a look at would be nice if we had at least some feedback from time to time to at most know what the devs are working on majoritally (if thats such a word). As you can understand as a player, although you got a head start on us, that not knowing if an issue has even been looked at is frustrating. Even if you say "I'll forward this on to the dev's" to the most constructive posts. If you do that 1x a day I'd prefer that then that'd make me happy.
At least we won't feel ignored :-)
EDIT: less exageration :-)

Q u o t e: my computer has malfunctioned havent been able to play wow for a week now :(
Too bad… I hope you will be able to get it fixed without too much trouble
Q u o t e: anyway i have a question for you, however if you dont find time to answer its no problem ^_^
lets say, playing on your dwarf hunter you stumble upon a badly geared character called xinjao who answers you in chinese and rarely leaves the grinding spot, you know he is known as a "farmer".
would you ever contact a GM in person at work to notify him that such a person is working on the server and try to get him banned?
We should not forget that there are many people grinding the same place for long periods of time in order to for an example gaining reputation with a neutral faction. We should also not forget that people from many, many nationalities are playing on the EU realms, and some of these happen to be Chinese as well.
What I am trying to say is that we should not jump to conclusions about the doings of other players too fast.
But to answer your question: If I notice a player doing some suspicious in-game, I report that player immediately with a detailed description of why I suspect that player of doing bad things. I report players the exact same way as you do, by clicking on the famous red question mark icon :-)
When I have reported a player of something, I then usually receive a notification from the Game Masters in form of an in-game mail telling me that they will look into it. FYI I get the same in-game mail from the Game Masters as you will if you report someone. I know that it can be demoralizing to see that the player you reported may still be playing after you received that mail from the Game Masters, but please trust me when I say that every single report on these matters is investigated, and appropriate action is taken when the reported suspicions are confirmed.
Q u o t e: btw really good job with answering all these posts, and ofc its really cool your danish too!

Q u o t e: Will Thundgot undergo a name-change with the release of BC?
Will he force an increase in the amount of possible digits in character names when the number of races exceed that amount?

Anyway, i've got a question for you;
What do you feel when you see things like "this/that CM is a damn c*ckblock" and so on, like if i'd say "Vaneras is such a *hole as CM" in /say and you would see it ? Would you pretend it diden't happend or did curiosity kill the monkey ?

No I wouldn't quit… I love my job and I am quite sure that I will not get tired of the game at any time soon :-)
Q u o t e: Oh, and a last thing, as a guy on the US forums said in a thread, it's wrong taste on the pie in the warlock forums, could you check it out ? (perhaps less flamebaited rabahrber ?)
I will see what I can do. But please remember to report those annoying troll and flame posts when you see them, since this a great help on moderating the forums.
Q u o t e: EDIT: Another question, as i've read somewhere that WoW is a 5 year project, what do you see yourself doing in roughly 4 years from now ?
It is most surely not inconceivable that I will still be working for Blizzard in one way or another :-)

Q u o t e: Quite an interesting read this has been :)
I do have 1 question (no not a new realm question shock horror).
When you PvP against someone and they happen to beat you do you sometimes go "argh I wish they didn't have that bloody imba skill!"
Note - The skill is probably not imba, just felt like at that moment in time :)
Sure I have had my share of frustrating PvP fights, but usually only in duels. Regular PvP seems much more chaotic than in duels, as it seems like people use way more time to assess the situation in order to take appropriate action. In duels people usually always know what to do in any give situation, and that often seems so artificial to me compared to real PvP.

"The greatest compliment that was ever paid me was when one asked me what I thought, and attended to my answer."

I cannot argue against that :-)

Q u o t e: Well now that we know you don't mind answering these questions, there's been this one question which has always been bothering me;
Was Chuck Norris in any way whatsoever involved with the design of High Overlord Saurfang?
No... But Robocop was a Paladin :-)

Q u o t e: Vaneras, apologies if this has been answered before, but how long do you hope to be working at Blizzard for? And if you were given the opportunity to, would you work on any other Blizzard games or stay with WoW?
Honestly this is not something I have been given much thought. I really like working for Blizzard and right now I see no reason to leave. Right now I do not see myself working with other Blizzard games :-)
Q u o t e: Also, do you do anything other than CM'ing for Blizzard? Like getting the beer when it's all gone :O

Q u o t e: Based on something I heard I just have to ask:

Noted :-)
I can see your point 100% and I must say that I have nothing to say against what you say :-)

(such as with the US "Recruit a Friend"-program though not neccessarily with a reward)
I am fairly sure we will have a similar thing here in Europe, but I really cannot say anything more about this since I currently do not have any specific information about this available.
Q u o t e: Will Thundgot undergo a name-change with the release of BC?
Will he force an increase in the amount of possible digits in character names when the number of races exceed that amount?
I am sure that Thundgot will keep his current name, if not for sentimental values :-)

Q u o t e: Always nice when the community and Blizzard communicates, gives the players more faith.
Anyway, i've got a question for you;
What do you feel when you see things like "this/that CM is a damn c*ckblock" and so on, like if i'd say "Vaneras is such a *hole as CM" in /say and you would see it ? Would you pretend it diden't happend or did curiosity kill the monkey ?
Let's just say that it is not appreciated when somebody cannot keep their frustrations within a civilized level. There is no need to make personal attacks like these… Ever! But I never take these things personal as that would be quite unprofessional of me.

I see that plenty more questions have appeared since last I posted, so I will see if I can answer a few of them now.

Q u o t e: Hello Vaneras.
I came from EQ2, a decent game but one that didn't really wet my 'appetite'.
What done it for you?
What done it for me I hear you ask, I stealthed as a rogue at level 14 all the way through Stonetalon thinking I was invisible to all those high levels (LOL), the excitement, the anticpication, thats what gripped me and that's what made me love WoW.
What was your defining moment ingame which made WoW stand out from the other decent MMO's out there?
I guess what made World of Warcraft so special was the fact that I could actually play the game right away after installation. The game felt naturally easy to control and it was therefore much easier to focus on gameplay and having fun. It was truly a joy to play right from the beginning and I very fast gained the sense of actually progressing in the game.
The other MMORPG's out there that I have tried never felt like that. It was always a huge task of just getting started and to familiarize myself with the controls, and it took a long time before I actually felt that I had done any progress with my character.

Q u o t e: One thing I really need to ask you Vaneras is that what kind of music you listen? =)
I like almost all kinds of music, and I really do listen to almost everything. What I listen to really depends on my mood and of course what I am doing.
Right now I have some classic Bob Marley on my play list :-)

I have a 60 Warrior that I would like to bring to over to my main characters server :)
I am sorry, but I have no new info on this other than what has already been announced.

Q u o t e: As do the dwarves, ie a head to put yer pint on when there are no tables free at the inn, a beard to mop yer chin with when there are no napkins available and best of all a friend who looks like his father mated with a goat :) gives you hours of endless humour and jokes :)
Yer can mock me all ya want lad, but stay away from me beard. *snort* Me facial hair is precious and I be darned if it be touched by purple hands. *hick*
Arrgh… *burp* Elves and their strange jokes… *hick* Yer should know that jokes are not funny unless they involve beer… Did ya know that?

Q u o t e: Vaneras, I would just like to thank you for all the questions you've answered in this thread about just about anything. You've answered ALOT of my personal questions about working at Blizzard Europe.
Nice to hear that I could be of some help to you :-)
Q u o t e: You see, I've applied for a GM position and I'm actually flying down on Wednesday for a live interview about the position (I'm writing from an alt on a friends account, for several (some obvious) reasons).
Cool. Maybe we will bump into each other when you are here then :-)
Q u o t e: I had some (natural) fears about all of this, but if anything you've given me a very positive image and now I hope I get the job more than ever (I fluctulate alot between utter dread of (possibly) moving and extreme joy and excitement)
To be nervous is normal when going some strange place, especially when you are going to apply for a job in another country. I can understand how you fell and I wish you good luck :-)
Q u o t e: I would just like to ask you what you thought about relocating, what was the hardest parts with the actual relocation in your opinion? Not counting leaving friends/family (in Denmark).
Well besides leaving my friends and family, I do not think that there were things that hard. Everybody here has been and still is very helpful, so the whole relocation went pretty smooth. I guess the hardest part for me was that I did not know a single word of French before I moved :-)
Q u o t e: I'm from Sweden, myself, and have worked in Denmark, btw. ;)
Cool :-)
Q u o t e: My worst dread as of now is getting lost in Paris and actually miss the appointment. :-)
<3
Sort Guld in my heart. ;)
Well I do not have much to say to that. Just try at least not to oversleep ;-)
Again, good luck with everything :-)

Q u o t e: Let it be known that Vaneras is infact a CM(Community Manager) who makes the forum a nicer place to be in, he's not a GM who sorts out in-game problems.
I'm sure it's been answered before, but... Vaneras, are you a PVE person(raider) or a PVP person?
I like to do both very much so it is hard to choose, but I think that I probably prefer PvP a little bit more than raiding. Some of the most fun and exiting moments I have had in-game has been some really fun PvP battles. I especially love the random skirmishes that can occur outside of the battlegrounds :-)

Q u o t e: How often do you feel unable to post useful information because it isn't 100% certain yet and a great mighty storm of whining could be expected if it would be changed?
It happens now and then, but I really can't be very specific on that.
Q u o t e: If I recall correctly, it was you who issued the "blue challenge" to the US OT'ers. As I understand it, things turned rather messy there. How did Coreiel react? =)
I believe that Coreiel was not too pleased, however I am not entirely sure about Coreiel's reaction. It was all meant as a little fun "forum-duel" between the US and EU off-topic, but unfortunately the whole thing got a life of its own and went out of control. I applaud the way Coreiel handled the situation :-)
Q u o t e: Why don't EU blues have nicks such as Feathers, whelp, Facetree etc. ? I guess they're community-made though so that's a bit curious.
I don't know why we do not have such nicknames here in Europe. I think you are right that it might be a community made phenomenon.
Q u o t e: I've heard rumors that Naxx would be on a 2 weeks reset timer but haven't seen any blue posts confirming it. Is that so?
Sorry, but I am not able to answer this question at this moment in time. :-(
Q u o t e: The quest chain for AQ Gates is one of the most epic experiences I've had in my WoW career. However, it's way out of scale for players wanting to complete it these days, since they don't have a full guild determined to do it to open AQ.
Is there any chance that the requirements (particularly the elementium cost and the green drake farming) will be lowered to a level that makes it possible for them to complete the questline?
I have heard nothing about any possible future changes in this questline or event, so I am unfortunately unable to answer this question :-(
Q u o t e: What's a "psychotronic muzzledorf"? We've adopted this term as title for one of our Dwarves but Narain Soothfancy refuses to elaborate. =(
I have no clue really. To me it sounds like a kind of Cyborg-dwarf. :-)

Q u o t e: Once again, really nice to see one of the "blues" being chatty here :)
And just outta boredom and ofc some curiousity I too shall ask a question ^^
What zone in WoW do you feel is the most beautiful?
There are many really beautiful in World of Warcraft, but I must say that I have a special attraction to Loch Modan... There is something really special about that place :-)

Q u o t e: Brilliant thread, Vaneras, thanks for all the responses!
There is one issue that is nagging my mind, and I wonder whether you could ease my mind on it, or if not, forward my concern:
Is the limit of 10 characters per realm per account (and the limit of 50 characters in total per account) going to be relaxed any time soon, maybe for the expansion?
I am one of those players who like to play many different characters (I don't consider myself to have a 'main'), and I have reached the 10 characters per realm limit on both the realm where my horde chars live (arathor) and the realm where my alliance characters live (stormrage). I would like not to have to delete characters to experience the starting areas of the new races...
I really wish that I could answer your question, but I have not heard of any plans on changing this. If I get any information on this, we will of course let you know :-)

Q u o t e: I have been thinking about this for a while, and I hope I can get an answer in this thread.
I wondered if Blizzard expected the players to progress this fast trough the game. When the game was released, the players cleared MC/Onyxia pretty soonish, then they released BWL, wich was also cleared pretty soon! Did Blizzard expect to see so much and fast progress in the game? Or are we slower then you expected?
Hope I get an answer,
Argos.
I don't think I will be able to give a satisfactory answer on this, because I really do not know what the developers were expecting when they created these instances. If I was to make an educated guess on the matter, I would think that they are pretty satisfied with the difficulty of these instances as well as the speed of progress made by the players.

Q u o t e: Here's a question for you Vaneras: Do you ever get bored at work? If so, what do you do? (plz don't say play wow, you'll push me deeper into depression... :P)
I rarely get bored at work... There is always something interesting going on somewhere on these forums :-)
Q u o t e: And a re-post of my original question: Does Blizzard give his employees extra time off to be able to fly back home and visit friends and family?
You get holiday time like in any other company, and you can use that holiday time pretty much in any way you choose :-)

Q u o t e: So, Vaneras, any idea why so many danish players just have to put "dk" in their names, or in their guilds?
Enlighten us plx! :)
I guess it is some sort of patriotic thing that many Danes have the need to let everybody know that they are in fact from Denmark. It could also be a way to answer the "where are you from" question before it is even asked and if this is the case, then they are just being practical. The Danes are not the only ones to do this by the way :-)
Personally I think it is kind of silly to give your character such a name, but that is just my opinion.

Q u o t e: Do you Vaneras have insight in all the other project Blizzard has? They for sure have not yet revealed game titles, diablo 3 (?) and so on. Or are you tied just to the WOW universe at blizzard. You should be able to talk to some ppl working on those project but do you actually now what other projects blizzard is up to right now?
Not about to get that the project information out of you. I'm just curius. I heard when warcraft 3 was in the middle end of the development blizzard said that everyone there, including the janitors, had homework playing the game =)
I do not have any real insight in the other Blizzard projects. My work revolves around World of Warcraft and its community :-)

Yes... Very much :-)
Q u o t e: Alot of profanity usually sprouts in guilds as a way of joking, what are your views on this?
I think that it is ok to have a rough tone as long as everybody involved is ok with it. But this is a very hard thing to keep under control over the Internet where you do not necessarily know the person you are joking with.

Q u o t e: Just wanted to say Hello! to the Danish Blizzard representative.
One more thing though. Do you know Thundgot and Aeus in real life? And if you do, do you call them by their nick or by their first name? :-)
Because sometimes when I meet people online first and then later get to meet them in person, I call them by their nick, because the first name of a person is usually the one I associate with them.
Yep I know them in real life and in real life I call them by their real names. We all work in the same office by the way :-)

Q u o t e: Hi Vaneras,
now that i can catch your attention in this topic tho, can you tell me about a queue issue and plans to fix it for my realm? its spinebreaker, it seems that migrations on this realms are totally useless, the last one to mazrigos i think few ppl migrated and there is the same queue's as always. Yes, the problem is that the majority of this server is spanish and we arent likely to split, any solution into it? :S
Right now there is nothing that can be done about the current queue condition on Spinebreaker. Several migrations has been offered to this realm in order to reduce the size of the queue, but as you yourself noticed, many people chose not to migrate away from the realm, and therefore I'm afraid that those who play on Spinebreaker will have to accept the current condition for a while still. I can understand that the Spanish population is tightly nit together, and that they are not willing to split up, but this unfortunately is a problem when the realms population cap has been reached. We acknowledge that the queue on Spinebreaker is an issue, but we cannot and will not force-transfer people away from the realm, and we will also not stop new characters from being created on this realm since this will prevent new players from playing together with their friends. It is a bit of a dilemma as you can maybe see :-)
We are working on a long-term solution for this problem, but I currently have no information to give you at this time.
Q u o t e: thanks in advance, and sorry for my english :-)
No need to apologize. You were able to make yourself perfectly clear :-)
