I cannot see system messages in my chat log, but its only on one character. On every other character I can see system messages. And it's just everything that appears as yellow.../rolls, server restarts, people leaving and entering raids, friends logging on and off, etc...
I've fiddled with the settings for a week now and can't solve this! Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Generally speaking, Adonae, not being able to see system messages is indicative of some conflict between your standard user interface and a third-party addon which has been installed; as such, you should be able to return normal functionality by trying the following steps at your earliest convenience to restore your interface to its default settings:

1) Log out of World of Warcraft to your desktop, thereby exiting the game completely.
2) Navigate to the World of Warcraft folder, which is often found in the Program Files directory (the default path is C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft).
3) Either rename (or delete) the WTF, WDB, and Interface folders. (Note: If you do not wish to permanently lose any third-party addons you may have accrued, or macros you've written for your characters, you would be well-advised to merely rename the folders, rather than delete them entirely.)
4) Log back into the game by double-clicking WoW.exe, ensuring that you do not reinstall any addons before doing so.
Let us know what effect, if any, that has on the issue you're experiencing. There may be other avenues to pursue, but that's a good place to start. :)

In all my time as a Game Master, Fiers, I have never seen any instance of disappearing system messages that was not resolved by following those steps; it is likely that something went awry when you attempted them. My best recommendation would be to try them again, making certain to perform each one precisely as it appears above. :)
