Subject: Account Hack/Restore. Only Quest Items???
   Background:

I have been a paying customer of WoW since day 1 of the Retail release. Prior to that I was a beta tester. I have only ever played one character the entire time I have been in game, and have amassed quite a collection of items. I was up until last week almost finished with my Tier-2 set from BWL. During my time in game, I have been a guild leader, Guild officer, Raid leader, and Class leader.

The only support tickets I have ever opened have been to report unacceptable activities from other players (almost exclusively people using F-Bombs in public in Ironforge). I have never once opened a ticket for assistance on a quest, or to recover an item. I am by no means a 'career victim'.

Scenario:

Sometime after 11:30PM CST on the night of August 10, 2006, my account was compromised. I noticed it the following Monday when I returned from a weekend trip. The people who compromised my account dropped my Alchemy profession, and took up Enchanting. They then sold every item they could on both my person and in the bank (including the bags), and they DE'd all soulbound items I had, selling the mats. They also sold all (meager) gold I had on my person, and finally changed my password.

I got my password changed via the forget password utility on the website, and submitted a GM ticket. My account was then suspended, and I got it opened back up by faxing in a form with attached ID (Thank you for sorting that out quickly).

At this time I was transferred to an account investigation department. These people will only deal with me via email, and the correspondence is mostly automated, only being answered at 4:00am.

To make a long story short. I requested that my account be restored to a point in time before the break in. They told me to submit an inventory list. I spent a long time documenting everything I had accrued over the past 2 years, but finally sent in the list. I'm now being told that only quest-rewarded items can be recovered.

Is this true? I've talked to plenty of folks that have had this problem happen, and they have all told me they had everything restored. People running BWL do not care about quest items. I want the drops back that I had to pay hard-earned DKP with. Look at the stories on this very forum, you can see plenty of folks who have had their items restored, quest rewards or not.

Blizzard, look at all the people who are having this problem. You have a security hole in your application if this is happening to so many folks. This is not our problem to solve. It is on your shoulders to make it right for us.

I will follow up with copies of the email correspondence.

   Hi Porkroast,

I have inquired into this matter and have forwarded on the information on your case to ensure that it is indeed still being looked into. Good luck with this.

There was one part of your post I thought I should comment on however.

While we try to do whatever we can to assist players who have had their account compromised, the underlying issues that lead to compromised accounts either are caused by poor security on the computer the client is running on or by the account information itself not being secured. For the first of these options there are very good websites detailing suggestions for how to make your "private" computer safer and more secure. As for the second of these, you should never ever under any circumstances give anyone your account information - including friends.
