Subject: Legality of an interface mod
I was wondering if a certain interface mod would be legal or not. This certain interface mod would gather data on items that don't necessarily exist yet on a server (or any server). Data such as stats, damage, anything you would find in a tooltip, including how the item looks. It only uses functions available in the scripting engine, does not use any third party programs, or anything like that. But it DOES have the ability to reveal unreleased content (or at least content that has not yet been seen and is at the moment unavailable).

Q u o t e:
The problem with this is that I don't think it's possible. A recent patch made it so that attempting to link item data that has not been seen on a particular realm will automatically disconnect you.

I'm not sure how the addon you're describing works, but if it attempts to retrieve tooltip information from the database on an item that hasn't been seen on the realm since the last restart, it will either fail silently or disconnect you.

The other way some programs work is by mining the game database files. This is done externally to the client and is frowned upon, if not actually bannable (since detecting it is very difficult).

In short, if the scripting engine allows you to do something without any external hack or modification, it's okay by definition. If a mod author has found some way to gain access to "protected" information, you can be sure Blizzard will fix it in a future patch so that it can't be done.

I should caution you that releasing information captured from the test realm client or from beta software (such as the upcoming expansion) to the general public could be considered a violation of the Terms of Use.
The information that Lealla has provided is quite correct, Tito, but this is a question that you would be better off posting on the UI & Macros Forum. Thank you!
Who are you, masked mystery man?! Unveil yourself...
