Subject: GM Explanation? *confused*
I am by no means trying to complain, I was just hoping for some clarification.

Today, I decided to ticket a GM, after several of my Guildmates, told me they found this toon's(my alt) name mildy offensive. When I ticketed a GM/E-mailed, I got the basic reply of, this is not an option for you, since your name does not violate ANY of our naming policy rules.

Later on, I still had a few guildies complain, so I ticketed a GM again, and was told again, this toon's name, violated no rules.

I am in Complete agreement with the reason you listed as to why you do not normally allow players to change their toons name, but none the less, I would like the chance to explain why.

When I made my rogue, I could not think of a good name, and, looking around the room, I named him after the first thing I saw a can of Copenhagen Black label Dip(a tobacco product)

Below I have Copy/Pasted a few lines from your naming policy that would apply to my toons name

Trademarks
This category includes both clear and masked names which:

Are trademarked/licensed by a company or an individual

Real World References
This category includes both clear and masked names which:

Are references to very well known people, characters, places, or icons (i.e. Britneyspears, Austinpowers, Mcdonalds, Georgewashington, Newyork)

Partial or Complete Sentences
This category includes names which:

Consist of multiple (generally more than 2) words strung together to create partial or complete sentences (i.e. Inyourface, Welovebeef, Howareyou)

I am sorry for being so persistent with this matter, I just dont want to offend anymore of my guildmates.

I appreciate all support/advice in this matter, and i hope you understand I'm not trying to be a nuisance, I just don't understand why, after seeing my name, and reading your rules, my name is still not considered a violation, making me eligible to have it changed......that, and the fact I'm just tired of my guild mates bothering me about it

Thank you once again for your support,

~Cope

Please accept my apologies for the apparent distress and confusion you've been caused by your previous correspondence with our department regarding this matter, Cope; if I may, I'd like to take this opportunity to offer the reasoning behind our decision not to change your character's name for the reasons you've offered. On with the show. :)

Q u o t e:
Trademarks
This category includes both clear and masked names which:

  • Are trademarked/licensed by a company or an individual

  • In order to understand why your name does not currently violate our Trademark policy, I'd recommend reading a little further down: "If a player is found to have such a name for their character, guild, or pet, and the trademark owner protests its use..." If you wish to have Copenhagen's lawyers contact our Legal Department and protest the use of their product names in World of Warcraft, you are more than welcome to do so; until we're contacted via official legal channels, I'm afraid that this argument shall not hold up. :)

    Q u o t e:
    Real World References
This category includes both clear and masked names which:

  • Are references to very well known people, characters, places, or icons (i.e. Britneyspears, Austinpowers, Mcdonalds, Georgewashington, Newyork)

  • While I can understand your belief that your name's reference to a specific brand of chewing tobacco constitutes a "real-world reference," we did not feel that Copeblackdip detrimentally affects immersion or others' gameplay to the extent that a name change is necessary. For one thing, as much as I'm sure Copenhagen would like to think so, Black Label dip does not quite qualify as a "very well known" icon in the same way as, say, Britney Spears or McDonald's does; show me a stadium full of rabid Copenhagen fans screaming at the top of their lungs, and you might have a case. As it stands, your name isn't even the full name of the product; it's merely an indirect reference to one. :)

    Q u o t e:
    Partial or Complete Sentences
    This category includes names which:

  • Consist of multiple (generally more than 2) words strung together to create partial or complete sentences (i.e. Inyourface, Welovebeef, Howareyou)

  • Although the claim could be made that your name consists of more than two words, it must contribute to either a partial or complete sentence in order to violate this portion of our Naming Policy. "Cope black dip" is neither; it's merely three words strung together, with no semblance of grammar nor syntax. Take it from a copyeditor: It isn't a sentence. :)

I hope to have offered some clarification as to why your name hasn't been found to be in violation of our policies, Cope; on that note, I feel I should remind you that all name changes are at the sole discretion of Blizzard Entertainment, and that it is the Game Master Department's interpretation of our policies -- not players', whether they are the owner of the character or not -- that is taken into consideration when such a determination is made. That said, I am sorry to hear that you are so displeased with the name you have chosen for your character. In the future, I would recommend imbuing such decisions with the gravity and forethought they deserve, as one's choices are generally lasting. :)
