Subject: Transfer: Character Name Change Clarification
My guild will be transfering to a different server with better end-game instance performance. Namely, the absence of lag/latency.

My question: Currently, my main character's name is not taken on that server. In order to assure that my main character retains that name, a name I am quite fond of, would it be prudent to create a place-holder character and then delete that character just before I initiate transfer?

Also, how long do character names stay "locked" after a character's deletion? Could I create a placeholder that would unintentially lock-out that character name for a period of time even after that character was deleted?

Lastly, o wise GMs and CMs... what would you do?

PS - My only intention is doing what I can to secure the name of my main character on a server I am transferring to. I have no intention of creating a mob of level 1 alts with unique names or, otherwise, abuse the knowledge of the system.

   Hello Mixxy,

I have posted advice on this before and will do so again here. However I must first warn you in this matter. While I can try to give you general advice on this, please remember that reserving a character name isn't something we can offer players or provide support for.

If you indeed create a placeholder character on the target realm and then delete it before you start the transfer process, so long as no one creates a character with that name before your Paid Character Transfer completes, you will end up being able to move your character while keeping its name. However there is indeed the risk that someone else will make a new character with that name in this period, which can be up to 5 days.

Your second option is that you leave your placeholder character on your account on the target realm. This will mean that your transferred character will be assigned a temporary name as its old name has been already taken. After the transfer is finalized you will be able to log into your transferred character. When you do this you will be prompted to choose a new name. If, just prior to logging on this character, you first deleted your level 1 placeholder character then you should be able to pick that same old name for your transferred character. Keep in mind that this is by no means guaranteed and would be at your own risk.

I wish you the best with this and good luck with your name.
