I created this character a long time ago (roughly december 2004, i believe), and i have completed the long road to 60. I have roughly 15 days of play time on this character, during which i have interacted with countless other people, who never had any comment about my name other than the rare "Oh i get it! thats clever". Then, just yesterday, when i was minding my own buisness in stormwind waiting for a battleground to pop, I get a whisper from an person unknown to me, stating "You know you're probably going to hell for using that name, right?". Normally, I'm a pretty calm guy, but this spontanious and unjustified comment incensed me. In my anger, I advised this person to "shut the f@%$ up" and promptly ignored them.
Later on that day, I try to log in and it says that i have to change my name. Quickly realizing why this might be happening, I checked my email where I found that blizzard had both warned me for using the "f-bomb", and had found my name in violation of their standards.
For the language, I can offer no other explanation that I was very angry at the time, and i was too caught off guard to be eloquent about it. However, I feel that being forced to change my name is a bit of a draconian punishment. I have had this name for over one and a half years, and just now you are forcing me out of it? From the number of people who were aware of my name and could have reported it, it seems the issue is more with the reportee and less with the name.
I know that it may not seem like forcing a name change on this little guy is a big deal, but after going through so much with him on the grind to 60, i have grown accustomed to him and his name. Once again, if i had been told to change my name earlier on, it would have been no problem.
I sent an email stating things similar to whats above, but I thought posting here as well couldnt hurt.

The unfortunate matter of fact in this situation is that, no matter how long it's taken your character name to generate reports or receive action from a Game Master, the name is still quite clearly in violation of at least one of our categories under the Naming policy.
At this point, in order to dispute this action, you will want to contact our Account Administration department, as it seems you have already done. Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience of this violation charged to you.

Since "Pwnt" is considered to be the language of leetists, this name would easily be referred to as "leetspeak." Along those same lines, since "pwnt" is four consonants in a row, it's difficult to pronounce unless one knows the ways of the leetist. For this reason, it can be considered "pure gibberish." Since the name is also a string of words (well, arguably words) put together, this name could even be considered a violation for being a "partial/complete sentence."
Edit: Ah yes, and the name could technically be considered a violation for having a religious context.[ post edited by Batta ]

That would be a very weak argument. Ponitus Pilate was a historical figure. Most of the information that has been handed down concerning him has been secular, not religious.( see: Josephus, historian) Is Caesar a referrence to a religious name or secular one? Just because a name is in the Bible does not make it "religious."
Understand, I am not disagreeing that the name is in violation; Only in the particulars which apply, albeit loosely, to what it violates.
You're definitely right, I just wanted to provide a list of all of the possibilites for which this name may have been changed. The religious argument is not a very strong one, as opposed to "leetspeak." I don't think many people would be able to argue that "Pwnt" is not a real word, or truly a word that could be pronounced.

Pontius Pilate probably also couldn't tell you what "Pwnt" meant, or how to pronounce it. = p
Keep in mind, the religious discussion about this name needs not come into play at all to determine why the name violates our policy.

Either way, these are clearly stated categories in our Naming policy that have existed since launch. Keep in mind, a name need only violate one category to be changed. This name fairly easily fits into three categories.

I don't find your comment rude at all; however, it's still a matter of fact that the Naming policy is in place. Any character names found to be in violation of this policy are subject to change.
