Subject: Trap Resistances - Developer Response
I'm making a new thread for this so it's easily read.

As I told you, I asked the developers for more information. Thankfully they did check in with me today and I have the response to many of your questions and concerns surrounding this issue.

Why wasn't the unresistable trap bug fixed until now?

The bug was not high on the priority list, but it did need to be fixed eventually. (Caydiem sidenote: you folks well know that there have been several higher priority bugs in your own class as well as others.) The designers are of the belief that the changes coming in 1.7 more than offset the fact that a bug that worked to the Hunter's advantage was fixed. The talent changes aren't the only thing on the way -- you folks haven't even seen the pet changes yet. ;)

Why are traps supposed to be resisted?

Practically everything in the game has a failure rate of some type; traps were not meant to be an exception. The argument has been made that other spells or abilities that can be resisted can be recast, but abilities like Frost Nova, Psychic Scream, and Sap have restrictions (such as lengthy cooldowns and the need for the creature to be out of combat, respectively) that make them once-per-fight abilities, and they also have a chance to fail.

One of the few half-exceptions to this "chance of failure" rule is in fact the Hunter's ranged attacks, which cannot be dodged or parried.

Why can't we use traps in combat?

It is the feeling of the class designers that traps would be overpowered if they were usable in combat. This is an aspect of play that they have tested internally, and each time it was blatantly overpowered in practice.

What about the "double resist rate" when using Traps in conjunction with Feign Death?

Feign Death is its own ability with its own risks and benefits, one of which is the chance to lay another trap. It is not designed to be used only in conjunction with traps, and as such, the developers do not feel that the resist rate overly damages the viability of either Hunter skill, particularly now that the resist rate bug has been fixed.

***

In closing, as it stands, this bug fix will not be reverted, and there will be no change to allow traps to be set in-combat. I hope this clears up some of the developer thought behind the change and where they stand on its relation to the Hunter class as a whole.

Q u o t e:
Cay - did the devs give any indication of what the resist rate for traps are? For instance, we've been told that FD has a 4% resist rate - meaning that the Improved FD talent should result in unresistable FD.

Are traps a base 10% resist chance (in which case the talents would make them unresistable for most cases and scenarios), or is it higher?

They didn't tell me, no.
