I was very excited for this implementation simply because it allowed for a greater chance of back-to-back games with full team rosters. Having been playing the PvE aspect of the game for so long the questing and grinding have become a fair bit stale, monotonous and routine. So the chance for continual PvP action was very, very inticing.
Technical issues aside, as any large change such as this to the game was bound to have it's flaws at the get-go, there were some surprising disappointments that I'd not forseen with this new set-up.
The first and foremost was the loss of the familial realm ties. Prior to X-Realm WSG I could at least recognize several of the players I was teamed with as well as those I was competing with. It created I suppose you could call a local feel to the whole thing. Things that occurred in the BG's could be discussed, argued, or bragged about in the specific realm forum. Now however, I don't even feel a need to look at any of the players' names. They're just faces I'll see for a short while soon to be replaced by another 9 or so people I don't know or recognize.
As a side to that note, with so many people in queue for all the various games, new people were coming and going at a rate I could never have imagined. I think the highest rate of turn-over was something like 11 people in about 15 minutes.
All of this seemed to take away from a very strong aspect that I'd come to recognize from playing the Horde: teamwork. It seemed to me that no matter what bracket I was playing in the Alliance were generally dominating simply because the style of the game was catering more towards the faceless, nameless, do your own thing format that they are generally stereotyped as playing.
Anyways, this quick and dirty, come-in and go-out and come back in again X-Realm BG style certainly has its merit in terms of quantity, but as for quality, I really feel something I once so enjoyed from this aspect of the game has been lost. But who knows, maybe with time a new sort of bond will be formed between the realms that could not have been done any other way. I truly hope Blizzard adds a X-Realm forum of some kind where we can talk with those new names and faces we might start coming across in greater frequency as the next few months go by.
Epic drops should always default to the cutest.
