Subject: A Problem For Mages (Constructive?)

I'm going to take a break from my usual flamebait to post something that may actually be constructive.

The majority of mage complaints fall under the PvP realm, especially after 1.11. At least I don't hear anyone complaining for more aggro reduction than we got.

Human nature seems to be prone to complaining about what is bad as opposed to what is good. For every person that looks at 1.11 and says, "Raiding just got so much easier," there are ten people saying, "Yeah, but have you pvped lately?"

Let's look at the 60 PvP experience. Outside of world pvp (of which there is little) you have three battlegrounds. Now, oddly, one of them mages wtfpwnbbq everyone in a 10 mile radius. That is Alterac Valley. It's huge, there's usually a front line of meatbuckets to absorb the attacks and it's a total mage's playground. That is Pvp and nobody brings it up during the 'mage sucks' discussion. Why is that? Because mages are fine there. More then fine, they can dominate. Even their AoE is critically useful there!

So what's the problem, really? The problem lies in that everyone that wants honor will find themselves pigeonholed into the faster games of Warsong Gulch with a sprinkling of Arathi Basin. And Warsong Gulch is NOT a friendly experience for a mage. It's the smallest battleground and with the exception of midfield you'll often be within melee range and if you're not then you likely have Line of Sight issues. Compounding that is the Tunnel of No-Blink-Zone which has to be one of the worst blink locations in the game *and* we're forced to spend a huge amount of time there.

Anyway, the point of this post is that perhaps so much of mage frustration comes from being forced to play a melee-centric battleground. Of course there will still be class issues but I'm talking about the *source* of mage whining. I think this is at least a piece of the puzzle.

Solution? Give us more battlegrounds that are good for honor (key point there since people often only join AV to wait for their 'better' BGs to open) and so the mage can enjoy being a mage. Shooting spells at people from a distance.

Was only a matter of time before I devil's advocated on myself. I'll go back to hating Tseric and the patch now. Ta ta.

I have always been concerned with isolating issues into their proper categories in order to understand them better. Often times, an issue in game is touted as a class issue, when it may be a situational matter or that external conditions are interacting with abilities in a certain way.

It will be interesting to see the participation of Mages in the early days of this patch. With reports of a good deal of PvP occurring around LHC, this might see a different balance than an AB match. As we plan on expanding elements of world PvP in the future, this could further bring a better balance for PvP to this class as well.

In short, yeah, I pretty much agree.

Sure thing, just don't forget to eat your vegetables.
